    Hi ALL,

First time posting here. Usually post in poker forums. Here goes:

What the hell is the point in a laptop having a cd rom drive.

Is there anyway that I can copy stuff from my c: drive to a cd?

If my laptop does not have a disk drive and no usb port, how can I copy to cd?

Surely to God there is a answer.

If it's a CD writer you'll be able to.

What do you mean a cd writer. I have a brand new blank cd and want to copy to it.

When I try to copy over to d: drive its says you cannot copy over to this cd rom drive.

When I try and save a file to the d: drive by going save as it says:

you do not have permission to save in this directory. See the administrator to obtain permission.

    PLEASE HELP ME, PLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!

Sounds like you don't have a CD writer, so you can't copy information onto a CD.

What make/model is the laptop? How old is it?

Compaq EVO N610C Pentium M processor.

Why would I not have a cd writer?

these are the most common types of cd drives.

    1. CD-ROM - can only read cd's cannot copy files on to them
    2. CD-RW - can read cd's and copy files on to them.
    3. DVD/CDRW - can read cd's/dvd's and copy files to cd's only.
    4. DVD-RW - can read cd's/dvd's and copy files to both cd's and dvd's.
Compaq EVO N610C Pentium M processor.

Why would I not have a cd writer?
because depending on how the manufacturer specified the laptop when you bought it, they may of left one out. not all laptops have them.

You can probably buy a CDRW for it if you wanted, probably swappable with the other one.

If i go to properties on the d: drive its says DVD/ CD- Rom drives.

Im pretty sure it does not play DVD'S????

Please tell me I can copy stuff onto my CD. I'm about to cry.

buy this or alternatively buy this which should work with your present laptop, which is probably not worth upgrading and either will work with a newer replacement

I'm not sure how old your machine is, but CD writers only became commonplace about 4-5 years ago. A google search for that machine name leads me to conclude it's around that era, perhaps a little older.

"The point", as you ask in your first post, is so you can get information and programs onto it in the first place; i.e. installing MS Office / games etc.

Agreed, that with no floppy drive and a read-only CD, information would generally only go *on* to the laptop, unless you connected it to a network.

If you want to copy stuff off it onto CD, you'll have to either
    1) connect an external CD / DVD burner (like http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=327994) or
    2) connect to a network and copy the files you want to a machine that has a CD burner.

    Hope that helps

Your internal drive is a probably a DVD-ROM\CD-ROM combo drive by the sounds of it which would mean it is a reader only.

Before buying an external DVD\CD writer verify if the drive does have CD writing capabilities by downloading VSO Inspector and installing it. It will tell you if your drive is capable of burning to CD's as you will see a tick for the CD-R box under write features.

[Edit]Actually another google shows that it has only a regular CD-Rom drive. I dont think your laptop can burn cds..[/edit]

That laptop is pretty new, and a google shows a site telling me it comes with a DVD burner even, so even if that's not standard, I'm going to guess that you do have a CD burner.

The problem is probably then, that Windows XP either doesn't know its a burner, or is not setup to allow you to use its method of CD burning, with drag and drop.

Your best bet is to see if you got any other software on the PC for burning, and see if that works.

    If you go,
    Start > programs

Do you see anything called something like?
Roxio, or Nero, or EasyCD creator, or anything with 'burn' or 'cd' in it?

    According to this http://pcworld.about.com/news/Jan072003id108434.htm

It has a dvd-rom/cd-rw drive. What are you trying to copy, and what program are you trying to do it with? download a trial version of nero and see if that helps. If not just buy a usb key or a usb external hdd.

Thanks for all the help and responses.

No I dont see anything about burning. I didnt think it was that old. I though a laptop with a Pentium 4 M processor would deffo be able to copy onto a cd. So I was thinking I had to go to control panel and Admistritative tools and do something there. The copy of XP ehmm is a copy. So would this affect it in anyway.

If I do have to change something in my settings, what??

And yeah I am coming to the conclusion that it is only a cdrom drive. Wow.

vso inspector, I'm thinking of downloading this. This will tell me the craic yeah?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭8T8

It will tell what kind of drive is in the system and what it supports so yes :)

Look under the write features section for anything with a tick in the box next to it, that will indicate support for writing that type of media CD-R = writeable CD's, CD-RW = re-writeable CD's, DVD-R = you get the idea.

I think we are clouding the matter somewhat.

Just open My Computer (top left of screen, double-click). List out the drives on the system (A, C, D, E, including description).
