    Hey,

Has anybody tried to get the virtual console games using their Wii Credits yet? i'm just wondering what the quality is like on the games like Super Mario 64 and all that! I really hope that can convert Goldeneye 007 but there is huge problems with Rare cuz Microsoft own them now! Damn Xbox!

Just a topic of discussion that I have seen so far on here!

I've bought a load of games on VC already, they're exactly the same as the originals.

The problem with vc to me is that they are just emulated which is grand and all but at the price they are charging its a bit of a rip off at least on the 360 your getting hd versions with some extras. I can play the exact same version on the wii as i can play on my pc or emulators on my xbox or psp so why pay for it on the wii.

Can anybody advise me as to whats the best VC games to get? Never had a Nintendo before so i'm not familiar with any of the games. Also, will I be able to play these games with a wiimote or will I need classic controller?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,733 ✭✭✭Blub2k4

Most of them play with the wiimote, the rest I use my gamecube controller on which counts as a classic it appears.
I've bought R-type which is a classic old school shoot em up, gunstar heroes, Ecco the dolphin, sonic, and about 8 others, I mean take a look at the games and then read up on them on the web, wiki has articles on most of the good classics.
Personally the appeal for me against and emulator is that I've never fouind a 100% reliable emulator yet, and they all require a degree of messing, searching, downloading, installing, etc, with the wii it's just another channel to click on when I'm playing it anyway.
I think the prices are fine on them considering what I pumped into R-type when it was a coin op.

A quick tip, don't use the prepaid credits for wii shop, get yourself a 3v card and buy points directly from nintendo.

When you're browsing VC games in the shopping chanell there are icons telling you which controllers you can use, all can be played with the classic controller, most can be played with the game cube controller and about half (crazily wild guess) can be played with the wii remote.

I've got sonic and im pretty happy with that, I'll get a few of the snes games when I get a classic controller (most of these dont use the wii remote).
It would be nice to see some of the games get updated to use the wii remotes pointing functionality (Goldeneye, sim city ...) and its tilting thingy (racers), but me not being into illegal emulation I'm quite happy with what I'm getting now.

If you are going to get some; buy your wii points on the wii with a credit card - much cheaper than in stores.

Not much appeals to me at the moment. Got Sonic and Super Mario Bros and I got Gunstar Heroes based on rave reviews. Probably will pick up Zelda NES and I'm looking forward to Mario Kart 64, Zelda OOT and Zelda MM. Oh, and Super Mario 3 (though it would be nice if they just released Super Mario All Stars with Mario World....)

You'll never go wrong with bomberman

As the lads said, buy your points from Nintendo, cheapest. Also, the games in the on-line shop tell you what controllers work with them.
I got Mario64 on Friday, it's excellent. Worth getting if you never owned an N64.
    Waiting for Goldeneye! :)

Gamestop(at least in the Clare Hall branch) are selling Wii points at face value so to speak,so anyone who doesnt have a card to use online, use them to purchase Wii points as everywhre else I have looked they have been charging ridiculous prices for them.

Gamestop in town are also selling them at face price... the HMV in Swords are selling them at €25 while almost every other HMV are asking €40/35.

sorry man, Microsoft own Rare now who made the likes of Goldeneye 007 for the 64 and Jonah Lomu Rugby for the playstation. Basically Microsoft won't be helping Nintendo anytime soon! sorry!

Two of the three Rare founders have left the company to 'pursue other oppurtunities'.

That sucks Goldeneye was one of the best N64 games. Looking through the Sega games makes me want to dig out the aul thing and give it a play.

I would recommend Toe Jam and Earl to anyone who didn't have a Sega - it's one of the best Sega games along with Sonic.

Quick question, is it cheaper to get a Wii Points Card than buy from the Wii Shop or is it the same cos I dunno what the need for points cards there is when it's easier to buy em straight from the Wii Shop channel. I suppose as a gift..

EA own bond rights as well so that compunds the problem. Stuipd really coz they could all make a tone of money off it.

You people should really play Goldeneye again. Time hasn't been the kindest to it. It may have been an amazing and innovative game at the time but it's awful now.

It works out at 100 pts = €1 if you buy from the Wii shop. (1000=€10, 3000=€30) where as in the shops, it's 2000=€25 (approx)

I'm with you on this Retr0, I think, personally, that Timesplitters 2 is as good if not better! True, the story is a bit crazier, and it doesn't have the "cool" element of playing as Bond (The only reason the EA bond games sold at all!) but the gameplay is easily as good, the controls are smoother, the weapons are as good, and there's very little not to like about it!

I traded my copy of Timesplitters 2 in before when I wanted to get a new game and money was tight and I've regretted it since.

Only problems with getting Goldeneye onto the VC would be EA and Sony..
As Rew stated above, EA have a firm grip on the rights to the Bond franchise which is parently owned by Sony..
More than likely, Rare as developers relinquished publishing rights during dev if not on the games original release. Nintendo hold the rights to the Goldeneye N64 game, not Rare (similar to the way, DKC is on VC under Nintendo's terms even though its a Rare developed game)
EA may only hold the license for present and future Bond titles, whether or not this applies to the N64 title is unknown, but Sony would still have overall control of the license and they would be the ones to convince.
Of course no-one here knows the full story so this may be incorrect, the only question is whether or not, it would use the Wiimote :D

Er, actually Activision own the rights to Bond...

Yeah, for Goldeneye nintendo will have to license Bond from Activision for that one game

    Sorry lads,
my mistake, I meant to say Activision instead of EA (they picked up the rights last year).......same scenario applies though I would imagine

What games are available on the VC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭Pablo-El-Vagabu

Reggie mentioned Goldeneye in an interview, said they were working on it and the rights to it was a messy issue..

Also IGN have it on their site as a release for the Wii in 2007.

    So dont lose hope...
