Tough day of IR shooting at stephen's green... Of course, the first real chance I've had to use the lens, and it's cloudy :(

If you're thinking of doing IR pics... tripod, low ISO, Photoshop :)original

I think the cloudy weather really took from the usual IR effect, but apart from that, an increase in contrast and a reduction in the red and magentas could make it stand out a bit more. Wait til the sunny days come back though!

Have you seen the tutorial Fenster uses for his Ir's?

Yeah, I was a little pissed that it was cloudy. I haven't seen Fenster's tutorial, and I've been looking for a good guide... what's the link?

Nice shot helios ,how does the ir filter affect the light meter on your camera?
Does it stop down much ?

On a good day it doesn't stop down too much. I found though that if you start zooming the pic isn't worth taking... the whole thing becomes too dark and you'll have to start taking full-second exposures. Unzoomed, at a decent ISO, the exposure is a bit quicker and you may be able to handhold the camera, but a tripod is deffo needed for a decent pic

I thought you meant in camera! When you say IR shooting, do you mean normal shooting and then into Photoshop or actual IR shooting?

Whats the difference in Dark red and black infra red fliters ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

The dark red will leave some visible wavelengths through, whereas the opaque one won't. In practice this means you can compose and do a DoF preview with the red filter on but not with the opaque one.

Cheers, I lost that link. :D

Getting a good IR photo is more about getting a good shot than good processing. It's going to be noisy, and I can see it in the photo, everything in the background kinda blends together (I have bad eyesight). A great foreground focus makes for a great IR shot, be it shilouetted or not.

If you're going to put the photo into black and white, try and go for a strong contrasting look.

awwwww thanks _Brian_ I had two choices when buying a filter, with a budget of about €30, €35 max. I could get one off ebay for about €20, but after shipping, it would be about €30. I managed to get one at Conn's Cameras, their last one, for €31 which is pretty much on par with eBay. It was a reputable seller and all, but I hate paying double the cost of the item in shipping...

Since I'm just starting out, but I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys have about IR pics.

After a little research, I did a follow-up shot, and it definately turned out better than my first...

    C&C for the first pic:
From myself i dont like the picture, i dont think it does you any favours.. There is no point of focus, nothing to drag you into the picture at all. Due to the clouds the photo just seemd to fade away. The clouds were not your fault and i am trying not to be neative towards you BTW. I think as pointed out before you really need a sunny day for the best results for this type of photography. I hope you dont take offence?

As it happens i have just placed an order for a 67mm RM72 Infrared Glass Filter from Hoya, from BHPhoto in the USA. i m heading of this weekend and am keeping my fingers crossed for some sunny sky's

Good luck with your new filter and please post your progress.
