Hey guys... I've only ever posted here a few times for C&C... I'm 17 and thinking about applying to DIT. Some critique would go a long way !

Been doing photography for the past year and a half or so- just learning from the net and books etc... and asking around (art teacher etc...) So any other advice would be great!

Heres a pic I took in the botanic gardens of a cactus

Heres my Flickr link if you feel like looking at the rest...?

Like this a hell of a lot, great backlight and lovely little traces of cobwebs.
Great start to your carreer :)

That's a great shot, will check out your flickr later, and give comments on it.

What kit are you using? Make sure to check out all the colleges, see what suits you.

The best thing to do at the moment is to keep on shooting, seeing what works and what dosn't, and have a nice portfolio built up. Remember to keep a notebook of what you've done and can do, ideas behind your work and all that. Colleges like to see you can think and have ideas, they can show you the rest. :)

Thanks a mill guys! Great advice :)

I have a few notbeeoks going... visual diary, darkroom records etc... But I have to update them. Also I've looked at a few courses and I feel dit is best suited to me and I'm putting iadt as my second choice. (I'm applying this year!)

    Kit wise I'm using:

Digital- D70s (after months of saving!) with 17-80 kit lens, Sigma 70-300 apo and I'm also saving for the sigma 105 macro- should have it soon(ish).

Film- Phenix DC303N (completely manual slr), with 50mm kits lens and a second hand vivitar 70-210mm.

I'm hoping to find a cheap f90x on ebay so I can use the same lenses as my d70s!

    Hey Dr.Louis

Sorry to say I dont like the shot all too much.

    Dont likes
    - Shalow dept of field with just one row of spines kinda sharp would of liked the whole cactus sharp
    - Lack of color in the cactus it should have a beatuiful green color which IMO enhance the shot.

    Likes
    - The black background it's very effective.
    - General composition.
    - Subject.

Had a look through your Flickr and liked a lot of your work.

    Thanks guys!!

and to Sebzy I do get what you mean, I would have liked a bit more dof, but thats just something I'm trying to get used to atm! but tbh I dont like the whole idea that a photo 'should' have this or 'must' have that... critique taken on board though! :)
