Two Windows machines on a LAN...

I'm logged onto a computer on a domain as the domain admin and wish to access another computer that is physically on the LAN and has a local admin account currently logged on.

    Can I access the machine?

eg \\machinename or \\ip or Net Use command.

Message is "remote computer is not available". Thought I might be prompted to login.

    Access it in what way?

    Shares? RDP?

Can you ping the other machine?

What OS is on the machine?

Is there a firewall enabled on the machine?

    yada yada

There is the default admin share on the C: and D: drives.

    Yes.

Windows 2000 Professional on target machine, 2000 Professional on one source machine I tried, Server 2003 on another source machine I tried.

    No.

The Server 2003 maching gives the message "No network provider accepted the given network path."

The 2000 machine gives the message "Remote computer is not available".

Have you tried \\(computer's ip address)
Also, can you create a share on that target machine?
Maybe you need to run that network setup wizard first.

Also make sure "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is installed

and check any firewall allows it

try to connect to \\127.0.0.1 from the machine itself - if you can't do that then it will be harder from elsewhere
