not a techie but seeing that rte.ie/sport can geoblock the live sports to the republic I wonder if in the near future satelitte boxes will be able to be geoblocked? or is that way too complex? just thinking of bbc and itv and if they could be able to geoblock on satelite in future.

Only if a viewing card is used as was previously the case.

Though Ultra HD used for cinema projection has embedded GPS as part of security system. The receiver will not work if moved from the cinema.

:: There are ways to defeat this.
:: It is two expensive for consumer systems
:: It might be illegal for consumer gear in EU.

So as Tony says only encyption and viewing card. Which of course does not limit geographic area at all. When BBC was encrypted and on a wide beam people in Turkey & Egypt had Sky viewing cards. With the 2D beam it can still be watched in half of Europe with progressively larger dish, but is definately on a geographically smaller area.

A tighter spot beam with greater fall of in gain outside footprint would have to illuminate the entire British / Anglo-Celtic Isles and be receivable still with larger dish in most of Lowcountries, parts of Spain, France, Denmark, Norway etc.

So, really no method of geo blocking is complete nor foolproof.

The BBC was commited fromn before Digital started to cardless non-encrypted broadcasting. The Sky viewing card period was temporary till they could sort out viewing rights and reduce the footprint.

Connecting to a landline could enforce this, Your box would only be active if connected to a particlular countries phone system. You could enforce this by having numbers that you could not dial outside the country i.e. 1890 no's in the ROI, :) However using VOIP could probably defeat this. :(

You don't even need VOIP to defeat it!

It's amazing what you can do. I have no eircom/land line at all and had my number coming up as legitimate Dublin landline the other week.
