That's probably the sound of the hard drive spinning up.

no its not it its about a minute after it spins back up and its quite loud its not doing it as much since i told it top stop going to sleep but it does it still does it since the drive spins down when idle

its rather loud and if i tap the mini it stops

Okay, in that case I would say it's definitely the fan. As you say it's rather loud, and it stops if you tap it, you should be able to get it repaired for free under warranty.

thought it would have been hdd tbh, ok so what should i do next? i think its the hdd though since it only happens just after it spins up, ive stopped it going to sleep but the hdd shuts off when its inactive

It's probably the fan but is the hd working fine otherwise? Have you verified it and checked the SMART status in Disk Utility? HDs can sometimes become very noisy as they're failing.

And if you send it back to Apple you will lose your data as formatting the hd will probably be the first thing they do; they may also just send you a new mini. If you're still under warranty it won't cost you a penny. They'll just have UPS or TNT pick it up and return it to you.

Can you not back up the music on an external HD or something?

Hmm yes it's quite tedious. It took just over 2 hours for me to transfer between 25-30GB of music to my parents iMac from my Mac mini. Nevertheless, I'm never doing that again.
