Hi guys, reading these posts with great interest, maybe lomm or fitzgeme might be able to advise me. My crown has snapped accross gum line. I had root canal treatment years ago ,when crown was done. the root of my own tooth is still in my gum. my dentist said crown cant be replaced, I'll need a bridge. does the root of my tooth have to come out? will it rot? If it has to come out, how will dentist get it out? -theres nothing to grab on to.

Cant really comment on your particular case but most of the time the root will have to come out. Even if it has no top dentists have all kinds of tricks and tools to elevate and pop up submerged roots. Sometimes the gum has to be cut to get at the root. This is called a surgical extraction and its really no big deal.

in general leaving roots under bridges is a no no. they come out fairly easily as fitzgeme says. where i practice people let their teeth rot until they are roots and i take at least one out a day and it takes no time at all. dont worry about it..
