vista and XP drivers

I'm buying a new machine. I like the dell offer with the free vista upgrade.

A couple of questions for the gurus -

If I don't like vista will I be able to roll back to XP?

Is there any chance that my 3 year old very expensive pc soundcard will work in vista? It has a custom applet that sits in the toolbar. The card is no longer made and there will be no new drivers written. If I can't us the card in vista then I'm not moving to it for another 2 or 3 years.

    Roll-back not sure maybe.

You can of course wipe the system and use the Dell OS CD to go back to XP or MCE (be sure to tick the box for the OS on CD media in the Dell ordering tab when it gets to that point).

XP drivers can be compatible in Vista but it largely depends on how well the driver was written I assume, what make sound card is it ?

I see pro audio gear well you are the at the mercy of the XP driver.

Unless you can find someone who will have already tried it or on another forum perhaps then the only sure fire way to know is to do the actual upgrade and see what happens it may continue work perfectly it may not.

One thing for sure is you cannot run the 64-bit version of Vista, as the XP driver is 32-bit only so it could only work in the Vista 32-bit environment.

A posting here under Soundcards shows that at least a Wamirack 192 works in Vista.

Thanks 8t8. It's an old card and it sold in small numbers, so I'd say my chances of finding anything in the net are slim. I think I'll buy the dell, go direct to vista, add the card, suck and see. If it doesn't work I'll reinstall XP.

Why do you want vista so much? Iv only really heard bad things and from what iv seen its not much different on the looks side of things. Completely useless for games at the moment.

Can you not find someone with Vista already installed & try the card in their machine?

It would save you a lot of hassle......
