Excitement? Mmmm that would be… am… let me think… I’ll get back to you on that

I started off in a small to medium (5 partners) practice and loved it – but the money was crap. But that was back in the mid nineties and things have much improved since then apparently for trainees – I was in practice for less than 2 years. Practice is something you don’t want to stay in too long unless you’ve a possibility to make partner.

I then moved to industry from GE and onto Dell, and I’m now FC of a small software company. The contrast couldn’t be bigger. I loathed GE and didn’t like Dell all that much either. The problem with big companies is that you can become pigeon-holed and you better love office politics.

Working for a smaller company you do miss the prestige of working for a big company, and you’re dealing with far smaller figures.

I don’t see myself ever working for a multinational company again, but for someone starting out it’s probably something you’ve got to do.

If I could go back again would I still become an accountant – Yip. Industry work itself is alright, but can become repetitive as it tends to be the same thing every month.
