Athlon 64 32-bit Software

    Hi,

I got offered an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and motherboard 2nd hand, but I really don't know much about the compatabitlity between 64-bit processors and older 32-bit software.

    1) Basically, can I use all the software that I would be able to use with my 32 bit processor, and would the 32 bit software take a performance hit because it is being run on a processor that it wasn't designed for?

    2) Can you install 32 bit windows on the system and it will act exactly the same as a 3500+ 32 bit processor?

    3) Are power supplies standard i.e Would the power supply for a Gigabyte GA-7NNXP that has a 32bit athlon work for an Asus A8V Deluxe board with an Athlon 64?

Used to be well into upgrading to the cutting edge and overclocking etc. but after I built my last system with a 2500+ clocked at 3200+ I packed it in.
My how the world has changed!!!

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Yes. No (some people even say it improves 32bit performance, but I don't see it personally and can't be bothered looking for info on it).
    2. Yes.
    3. Depends on the mobo really... the main power connection to the motherboard could be 20pin or 24pin... lucky for me I had a little adaptor cable that allowed me to go 20 -> 24.
My first Athlon64 motherboard used the 20pin + the separate square 4pin... my current Athlon64 mobo uses 24pin + the square 4pin and a feckin molex for the PCI-E slots (though I think it's optional).
As regards the power rating of the PSU... <<shrugg>> I took my 300W PSU from my old AthlonXP rig and it did the job nicely... but your mileage may vary.

    Thanks for the reply.

Am checkin up on the power supply situation now.
Another question: My current mobo has 2x256 PC3200 in dual channel, the board I'm getting has and 1x512 PC3200 coming with it and also supports dual channel, if I put this in will the dual channel on the 2x256 cease to work until I add another 1x512 to balance it?

No, you can add the other 512mb dimm too. It will work no problems. Hopefully.

    Give it a try.
