Wireless Driver for Packard Bell Notebook

Helping out a friend who by accident wiped her Windows Media XP edition (reformatted her harddrive) and overwrote it with Windown XP. Her main concern is getting internet access back. I downloaded the Driver for the NIC for her model from the Packard Bell site. All the software for the wireless seems to be working fine. Its finding the wireless connections and recognising the driver etc, but it won't connect. And the error is just that it times out. Has anyone had any problems like this before. I have downloaded another wireless driver for her now, one that was used with the older notebooks that used Windows XP, but I am pretty sure that this is not going to help. Does anyone else have any other suggestions what to do? I think I have looked at all the settings etc but maybe I am missing out on something?

    Thanks a million
    Polly

If it's finding the wireless network then it shouldn't be a driver problem. All I can think of would be that you've entered the access password incorrectly. That would cause it to not connect.

Does the wireless router assign IP addresses automatically (DHCP enabled) or do you need to assign an address to the wireless NIC manually, in which case check you have the right range of IP and subnet mask.

Has your friend got the original recovery discs that came with the PC? Can she just do a recovery install from this to put everything back the way it should be, or does she not want Media Edition any more?

    Thanks for your reply!

She is gonna wait for Vista. She doesn't have any back up CDs. I know. Its pretty bad. She is logging onto various different wireless networks at different times. She lives in the city centre. I can hook up to any of them still. I am not sure where a password needs to be entered. These are all unsecured wireless connections. .. its just really weird. I guess you are right about the driver being ok. I can only imagine that XP is having an issue with this NIC or is this impossible?

Next thing is to download her modem driver and start working off her broadband connection. Its just that wireless was always so easy for her located where she is. Once Vista is released hopefully all her problems will be solved!
