    On behalf of a friend....

He had lots of virus problems and AVG (??) didn't seem to be doing the trick so while he had someone in to sort out his new Irish Broadband he put Windows Defender on. Then he uninstalled AVG. Then downloaded Microsofts 90 day free trial virus protection. Did a full scan and found 40 or so problems. PC worked fine for rest of the day, online and off. Then he turned it on this morning and when he clicks on his username to log it it says

"Loading personal settings" but then it goes immediatly to "logging off, saving settings"

Same happens if he clicks on the other username...

So he can't get into Windows and is having hysterics!!!

He got onto Dell tech. support and they talked him through starting up in safe mode but the problem is still there and as they kept him on hold for ages he gave up!

    What should he do?!

I told him to "get a man in" to fix it!!!!

try this (system restore from cmd prompt)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

    or....

boot it up in safe mode and try to login to the administrator account

from here you can (in vga) create a new user account (give it admin level access)

reboot and click on the icon for the new user account

    then goto c:\documents and settings\old user name\

and search around in here for all your old docs, pics and stuff

log into safe mode and delete the user profile trying to log in

Then recreate the user and log in.

    * Save all our favourites, files etc into a safe location before making any changes
