This is in today's Irish Independent (Thurs 11th Jan)

"TWO Irish amateur photography clubs have been placed in the world's top 40 after entering the prestigious World Photographic Club Championships which was judged last week in Paris. The Federation Internationale de l'Art Photographique placed Drogheda Photographic Club in 23rd place and Cork's Mallow Camera Club 32nd out of 150 global entries.

The picture of a man enjoying a pint of Guinness in an Irish pub (above) was among the winning portfolio of the Wigan Foto 10 Club, from northern England, which scooped first place and the coveted Coupe de Monde 2006.

Des Clinton of the Drogheda Photographic Club said: "We know the folks at the Wigan club and they are incredible people. We are the top club in Ireland at the moment with about 50 members.

"There was a 27-country competition here recently and Ireland came second. The standards in this country have improved dramatically."

Our selection of entries includes: main photo - Portrait by Manfred Krendl (ESV - St Polten, Austria); clockwise from above - The Guinness Drinker by Philip Sharnock and King Penguins by Colin Smith (both Wigan Foto 10 Club), and Horsefair Trader by Des Clinton (Drogheda Photographic Club)."
