Thinkin of getting the kids a pet for the first time.
What was your first pet, what did you call them?
    What happened if/when the died?

My first pet was a Jack russell called Princey, we had him for about 6 yrs and when we were getting an extension on the house the builders let him out  Found him 3 weeks later wandering around the streets, he died soon after but at least he was at home:(

    A huge Goldfish...called Jaws :)

Thought us about the responsibility of owning a pet, changing the water and feeding him weren't too difficult and he was well contained :) Not enough space for a dog or cat and no danger of the fish mauling us!

There have always been family pets around me, getting one for a child in particular seems like a fairly crap thing to do imo.

A cat called Sam who died when I was about 3, I have very vague memories of him...
and a dog called Jessie, she was a fantastic pooch from what I remember:)

If you do decide to get a dog, go for a proper one and not one of those yappy little ****es

A grey persian cat called Xuxa (Shoo-Sha). She was great with the kids but my parents always had to shave her due to matted fur, giving her the weird poodle look. Best to go for a short-haired animal that doesnt shed much.

    A cat called Ginger.

He was great. Disappeared once for a month, and came home one day missing a bit of one of his ears and very malnourished. Was happy to have him back and he soon recovered, although he never left the garden again after that incident.

A black and white kitten called Sargent McCole, he died when I was about 5. Then their was Sargent McCole II and III both got hit by cars along with our other 9 cats.
Then a few pet lambs, who all got turned into lamb chops. Nothing like living on a farm when you young :)

I had a guinea pig called Wilbur (taken from Charlotte's Web) I had him for about a year and he started to get very fat and then he had babies so I had to rename him Wilburtina. The babies didn't last long and Wilburtina vanished without a trace from the garden about a year later. It's possible Magpies got him/her.

The first pet I have any memory of was a suicidal, yet seemingly indestructible goldfish called Sid (after Sid Vicious) that I won at a fairground. He would occasionally flip out of the top of his tank and land on the floor, often during the night and we'd find him there in the morning wiggling around on the carpet and my mum would put him back in the tank - half an hour later he'd been swimming around again absolutely fine. He lived to a grand old age as well - all his scales had turned from orange to silver by the time he died. God knows how he survived as long as he did.

Not long after that I had a hamster. I renamed her Cockle because she had the same colouring as the shellfish but she originally belonged to a biker friend of my mum and was called Twincam. I adopted her after she killed her partner Speedo during a vicious fight. She eventually found love again with my mate Shaunie's hamster Rambo (we used to let them play together - no funny business mind you) and was devastated when we moved away from the area and they never saw each other again :(

I loved having pets as a kid and really miss having them now. I look forward to owning my own home one day so I can fill it with cats :)

There was a stray cat that used to come to the house regularly for food when I was about 7 or so. Other than that I haven't had a pet.:)

So would a guniea pig be a good idea do you reckon for a 4 and 5 yr old, not must space in the house tho.
Is there a lot of paraphenalia (sp?) to go with them, is it ok to have just one?

A little brown and white girl hamster called Jenny :) I remember vividly that my father made her a cage for her .. out of wood!! (he was a woodwork teacher after all!) .. which she kept on escaping from (surprise, surprise!!). She died on the same day President Kennedy was assassinated, curled up in a small cardboard box with cotton wool in it near the fire. :sniff:

My first cat's name was Kitty, (shocker) and we had her when we lived on..........School Street, (so my porno name is Kitty School, IIRC) and she was a horrid cat that hated everyone on earth and was probably psychotic. I hated that wretched thing, but loved the pet turtle I got later on, I think his name was Larry or something. We also got a cat named George Washington and always had cats growing up, mostly named for my father's fisherman friends. They had names like Fess, Chandler, Ed, Jim and The Hummer.
    Don't ask.
