Supposedly it is going on the Sky Platform, I heard this on Today FM this morning. They are just negotiating the position on the EPG.

Just phoned them - next month to six weeks they expect to be on.

Now all we need is for Setanta to charge on NTL, and Sky is absolute king.

Oh, of course, we'll still be missing City Channel. Boo-hoo. :p

I'd prefer bbc 3,4 &HD on the epg, not too bothered about the ITV channels

Ehhhh.. Channel 6 is Irish (owned and operated anyway, whatever about their programmes).

I read they were based in the UK to get away from Irish regulation. The BBC channels are much better, with sky you can see any of the programmes on channel 6 on any number of channels.

If they had any home produced programmes I'd be more interested. Channel 6is just about selling advertising to viewers, no public service programmes at all.

I was just reading in the Indo (linky) that Channel 6 want the Sky EPG to be regulated in legislation, forcing Sky to put Irish channels at the top of the EPG, not down the bottom where they will be.
COMMERCIAL TV station Channel 6 has called for new legislation to give Irish channels priority positioning on Sky and other digital TV platforms.
    ...
Channel 6 claims that new Irish stations are at "a severe disadvantage" under present arrangements. The station is about to go on the Sky platform, but will be given a low placing on the vast list of stations, while RTÉ and TV3 are among the first stations accessed by customers there.
Just how the hell do they propose that would work? How can Irish legislation influence a British broadcaster?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭construct06

will this be on the uk epg? or will it be only available as part of an irish sub?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 184 ✭✭fta keith

Irish Sub. only or will channel 6 buy the UK rights to their overseas programmes I think the answer is no

channel 6 will be fta on the Irish DTT pilot project and the roll out of Irish DTT

These guys need their heads examined! They think they are special because they are an Irish channel. In the real world, they'll have to compete with all the UK channels we can watch so they should not be given preference on the EPG.

Its a scam the way NTL has done this on their EPG for Ch. 6, City channel and Setanta. I can only assume brown paper enveloples were involved...!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 492 ✭✭rcunning03

They're at a severe disadvantage cause they're crap. Why would I watch US programmes on this channel instead of the other ones ? So I can have some f*ck try to sell me a mortgage and other crap ads with Oirish accents.

I only watch RTE when it's a home produced programme (Which generally tend to be excellent) about Irish History, countryside etc even then the ad's kill me, espeically that Bank of Ireland ad with the scrawny little p*ick...Sorry going off topic there.

I don't care about Channel 6, they're just interested in grabbing a slice of the Irish tv advertising market, put them in specialist, and get BBC 3,4 and HD on the epg.

it is their own fault that they will be at the arse end of the EPG. they would be in a decent spot now if they didnt throw the toys out of the pram when they launched

    idiots

Why does it matter what number they will be?
In my experience if you watch a channel you will know its number (after a short time)
you could even add it to favourits!
I would much rather BBC3 /4 and itv and (ceebbies 617 :D) added to epg.

    Huh ?

Sky offered them somewhere in the 250 to the 290's when they launched

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054881959&page=3

Why on earth would Sky have moved them in the meantime unless Channel 6 offered huge amounts of money which presumably if Channel 6 were willing to do they would do now and get the 100's position at this point

They were originally licensed by Ofcom in the UK to broadcast on Sky only in the ROI on a semi-pirate basis. Then NTL/Chorus offered them a space on their EPGs and C6 wouldn't accept a place in the 200s on the SKy EPG because it weakened the brand (Maybe tey should have applied for 666 then?). Now I guess they've figured out that Channel 6 need Sky and not vice versa. I doubt it will be on 105, in case a fifth terrestrial opens and they call themselves "Channel 5". Then again, Our fourth channel is called TV3 and our fifth is called Channel 6. There is no sixth, and the third is called TG4......... AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭superdudeman007

Maybe Channel 6 would do better if they took on the style of a general terrestrial, with News shows in the style of News2 and a breakfast show in the style os RISE which used to go out on Ch4.

How do they think that we'll pay to see US imports that have already been on Free channels anyway?

Monday morning apparently is the date, although no announcement as to EPG position as of yet. 106 is not an option, of course...

there has been an EPG reshuffle since then

The adverts have started. Seen a full size poster add for Channel 6 saying "Now on Sky" yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭JohnDigital

Apparently their EPG is to be 223. What a rotten spot. Only saving grace is that it is next to Discovery when flicking through all stations.

Was a piece in yesterday's Irish Times Business Section (Fri Feb 2) on page 4 saying that Channel 6 would launch on Monday next at 221 or 223 on the EPG.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭kmurph

Full page ad in todays Irish Mail On Sunday confirming that their EPG spot is indeed 223.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭The Sparrow

223 is a bit of a rubbish position for them, but I`d say that once most people hear about it they will add them as a favourite and it won`t matter. They need to do a big advertising campaign because a lot of people still have no idea that there is another Irish station.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭dubmick

They have a radio ad on Today FM (or maybe it was RTE 2fm) today.

Their EPG spot is actually quite good for awhile if you ask me, when selecting stations in the "Entertainment" Genre just press up when on RTÉ 1 and Channel 6 appears so it is sort of alongside the other Irish Terrestrial Channels.

The vast majority of people I know go into to "Entertainment" "Movies" etc when they want to watch a channel making Channel 6's EPG spot not so bad until some other thrash channel launches making it no longer next to RTE.

I know people who have Sky for a whole year and all they ever watch is RTÉ1, RTÉ2 TV3 & TG4 on it despite having over 300+ channels. So illiterate are they that I had to tune in the Sky Digibox to all channels on the TV from 1 - 10 so they could work it having no terrestrial signal available despite paying a €155 license fee.

If and when the Analogue Switch-off comes to Ireland many many people will be having difficulty, these people had a hard time adjusting to Remote Controls and the fact that most TV's reguire you push two buttons to start them, having been used to the old "Radiation King" type Tv's which weighed half a tonne with one large button and about 10 big buttons saying RTÉ, BBC, ITV etc. Not surprising really when 23% of Irish people have problems with basic instructions and form filling and even texting is a taboo.

Channel 6 is one crap channel for sure, I wish Sky would allow us to edit the EPG as I can with my FTA Box to get rid of the clutter.

I saw a TV ad too. I think it was Sky News, but I'm not certain. It had pictures of characters from their shows, like House, Earl, etc. put into Oirish locations, like an old Oirish pub or a boreen in the middle of nowhere. The kind of places you see on postcards for tourists.

Not that I've been watching Channel 6 a lot but the pictures terrible! It's that annoying stuck between 4:3 & 16:9 problem. The same thing that been plaguing SS2 lately.

Yes. Fully agree Netwhizzkid. The one thing so many people complain about. You can't edit the Sky EPG to skip all the rubbish unlike even the most basic FTA receiver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭mjsmyth

why not just set up your favourites list with your most watched channels?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

I'd guess most folks don't know:
    1) Go services and setup / pick up to 50 favorites
    2) Pressing purple/blue/violet steps through these during viewing
    3) Guide then purple/blue/violet button gives full EPG with only your favorites

This was added only sometime last year and few people know about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭mjsmyth

Favourites just seems second nature to me, but then I don't have a Sky box, I have a FTA setup and it just makes sense..

Do you not have to pay tv license if you dont have a terrestrial signal. I just have sky and no terrestrial signal at all???

if you have a tuner capable of receiving television signals you need a license. whether or not you can receive a terrestrial signal is irrelevant.

if you had no tv but owned a vcr capable of recording tv then you need a tv license. your sky box also has a tuner that allows you to view tv

It does strike me as being a bit unfair having to pay the TV licence if you don't have any TV's hooked up to an aerial... Can't ever see it changing though...

Back on topic I can't see what everybody's problem with 6 is... Sure it's not a ground-breaking channel but it's a new channel on Sky with decent (if already available...) programming... I for one welcome it to Sky....:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,815 ✭✭✭Charlie

I must concur. It Certainly has a bit more to offer than alot of so called digital entertainment channels. Anything that airs The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld and (soon to be) Hero's, can't be doing too shabby a job in my books. With Champions League coverage, I would easily swap TV3 for it.

That particular topic was raised at the Communications Dáil Committee, its being looked at.

You probably can then... TV3 doesn't have Champions League anymore.

Watty, thanks about this info! I too, have only an FTA receiver. Just mentioned about the Sky EPG, as it was doing the mates nut in having to flick through the entire EPG looking for a channel! He's had Sky since Xmas. Will pass this info on to him!

When's heroes start? Heard good things... Although am I right in saying that it's on Sci-Fi or Fx or one of those first??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,815 ✭✭✭Charlie

Jees, shows that i've been watchin too much Champions League on Sky/RTE, to not have realised TV3 lost th rights. In that casee I would swap Channel 6 for TV3. IMHO Channel 6 are living up to their aim, which is provide entertainment programmes for a youngish demographic. TV3 seems confused as to what it is.

Heros is starting on Sci Fi I think around mid feb. However, from what I have watched on that channel, the bit rate ain't the best and a programme like Hero's appears to me as one which would suffer by being shown on a lower bit rate channel. Channel 6 from what I have seen so far doesn't seem to suffer from this.

    TV3 is television for women

and you are right about Sci Fi. i wouldnt watch any television series on it. picture quality is shocking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Tonio

Only one decent programme on TV3 and that's The Shield. But a series only lasts 13 episodes so I have to wait another 9 months to see it again. The rest of TV3 is just cr*p from ITV that I would never watch.

I can't remember the dates, but it will be on Sci-Fi first, and BBC later. I think there's only a couple of months between them.

Sci-Fi don't do widescreen, do they? BBC do. What about Channel 6? The little bits I've seen of it have been shows which were made in 4:3, so I don't know what they do with widescreen shows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

I think Channel 6 make some attempt at widescreen, but it nearly always ends up looking broken on analogue chorus here
