Is anyone here a member of Dublin Camera Club? if so how do they rate it or has anyone joined but left? Each year they have some good seminars which I would like to attend but I get the impression that the club is full off auld lads who think film is the be all and end all...or can someone give me a real insight.

I was a member for a number of years, but eventually let my membership lapse as I found myself less able to attend or participate in general.
I also became a bit bored with the weekly meetings, as it seemed (to me) to be the same thing over and over again, except for times when a guest speaker would attend - some of these presentations were very interesting, informative and entertaining.
There was also a bit of a clique going on (committee, old timers etc.), this could (and I'm sure did) turn some people off.

However, having said all that, I would still suggest that you attend a couple of meetings to feel it out and make up your own mind. Some of the courses which the society runs can be worthwhile, particularly if you are a beginner. There's also the darkroom and digital* facilities which you can make use of.

Don't know what the current membership fee is, but when I was a member it was quite reasonable.

*There were no digital facilities when I was a member, but I recall a budget being approved at the time for purchase of same.

It's 95 for the year, and you have access to a darkroom, studio and a digital editing computer, they have some interesting lectures, but I really have to start going more often to make use of it all...

There is some bit of a clique, but everyone I've talked to inside there is pretty open...

Thanks lads, I might just keep on eye on there website and see what presentations are coming up and go along when something takes my fancy.

Been a member for a while not and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone willing to learn more about the ART.

Just yesterday we had a 2 hour talk/show from Mark Nixon a Dublin-based portrait and wedding specialist. All I can say is wow

He just picked two awards recently
    - Irish Professional Photographer of the Year 2006
    - Classical Wedding Photographer 2006

He came with a brilliant array of images and knowledge to share with us.

It's true it can get a tiresome at times but thats just life avoid the meetings that just have prints for judging. I personally love the B/W judging nights which happen every month you get to see some great shots presented and commented on.

gandalf if you dont hear anything back you caould always do one of the following

    1. Call tem and confirm.
    2. Drop down on tuesday 8pm to the meeting and talk to Gerard at then end i can point him out.
    3. Attend Enrollment and introduction on Wednesday the 24th 6:30-9:00 and sort it out then.

For anyone who is intrested in joining the club you can drop down this tuesday @ 8pm. There will be judging of the BW prints submitted by club members both amiture and advanced. No idea who the guest judge is yet. It usualy takes around an hour and a half to get through all the prints then you can sort out membership or course enrolment

    It's not that simple
if you want to use the darkroom outside of club hours you will need to apply for a key to the front door and to do this they will need to know you.

Read the terms of membership when the website is back up it seems to be on the blink all today.

I posted in my application for a course last week.. must phone them to find out if all A-OK to attend now. Really looking forward to it, especially from looking at photos on this board too! (thanks!) :)
Its not that much extra to become a member, so I think I will do that for this year and see how I get on!

Does anyone know how large the classes are for this course? Just wondering as my boyfriend got me a place on the course for Christmas.
