Is this the first closure caused by a vehicle?

    Port Tunnel reopens after breakdown
    09 January 2007 19:52

Both the northbound and southbound routes in the Port Tunnel have reopened following a closure this morning due to a breakdown.

It is understood a car transporter broke down on the northbound tunnel at around 10.30am, causing both routes to be closed as a safety precaution.

The southbound tunnel had to be closed to allow access for the fire brigade.

The incident caused some traffic delays this morning.

Why would they close the other tunnel if the problem was limited to the Northbound?

Apparently they were using the southbound tunnel for emergency vehicle access.

If it turned nasty, you have the problem of having blocked up vehicles behind the accident and smoke in front of the accident.

Disappointing in a BIG Way.....it`s really just a new version of the AA Roadwatch Callsign..."A truck has broken down/shed it`s load at the XXX/M50 Roundabout".

Seems as if very little planning has gone into these things.....yet again......

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

from what I heard, the southbound tunnel was closed to allow traffic behind the truck 'escape' and then for emerency access.
What solution would others have planned for? How do you manage to get traffic out of the tunnel in such a situation?
Should they have built a 3rd & 4th tunnel just in case they needed to close #1 & 2?

obviously the government failed to specify the "no vehicle breakdown or fire ever" tunnel option for 2 million euro which will now cost 1,400 million euro + VAT to retrofit :D

It's a complete joke. Typical Irish nonsense. Next thing it'll be one truck at a time ...
