Leaving the bow aside, how is he getting that roaring guitar sound that seems to just resonate on and on, what effect is he using etc, there are times he doesnt use a bow and when he plucks a note or chord etc it just resonates like he's using an e-bow, thats what im looking for, cheers.

Kinda sounds like a delay with a very very very short delay time to me.

Jonsi has a specially designed bridge which enhances the effect of the bow, and he generally plays with a behooley load of reverb. just play with your effects, turn your reverb all the way up, try some delay...etc

Reverb with a high decay time and feedback and the bow :)

I can hear the reverb decay a lot in it though.

Delay, some filthy distortion, maybe using the neck pickup? For that Prince circa Purple Rain sort of fuzzy tone? A feedbacker, possibly? As for that roaring sort of screech, I think it's 'cause he has the bow so close the bridge. Just some suggestions.

    Great stuff, though :D

Well he uses a kinda violin effect, by using a bow... So unless you're gona use one of them lol... Saw them live, sounded like distortion to me, bit of delay... But the effect is all n the bow...

Ya I know, I am basicly looking for someone out there to tell me that there is a magical way of getting a bow'd or e-bow effect without actually using a bow or e-bow. I know you can use reverb and delay and all that but I was wondering if he used somethin else because he does get that long resonating sound even without the bow sometimes, i just cant find a clip.

    it's called gain!
your amp is a really big compressor! turn a valve amp up and you can hold notes for ages, roll the tone knob back a bit

He plays (or at least he used to) using a delay pedal, a couple of reverb pedals (on record they also use a lot of real reverb as their studio is a disused swimming pool) and a smidgen of overdrive. That's when I saw them live when ( ) came out anyway, sounds like the same deal now.

On Sigur Rós' site there are a couple of interesting articles, one is originally from Sound On Sound and another one (Future Sound?). Complete list of gear in the second one, nice interview and segment on the guitar sound in the first.
