    Hey all,

Just wondering has anybody had any similar experience to what im about to speak about..

Friends of mine are renting out an apartment in Manor Village. Iv been in the apartment many times and I assumed it was your typical student accommodation - the windows and walls were pretty grubby assumably just because they lacked in the knowledge of cleaning so I never really questioned it. I was aware there was some minor dampness but only today did I find out the full extent.

In all of the rooms (including bathrooms) fungus has started to grow rapidly around the walls, windows and floors. In one room part of the plastering of the roof came in. Each bed when bulled out is black below where the headrest is fitted onto the wall. In one room, its very bad. In another, the bathroom is so bad its pretty freaky. Blinds and Windows have fungus in each room also. More dangerously, behind the TV where all cables are for wireless network, TV, DVD, Game Consoles etc are - puddles of water keep forming so they have to keep moping. Its not a leak from the ceiling, its dampness from the wall.

One of the college lads has had a kidney transplant only a few months ago and is on many different tables - he effectively, has no immune system. Since moving into Manor he has commented how he was always sick but assumed it was due to the operation. One of the other guys who is also always sick told me "anytime I come to college, I seem to get sick"!

Well within the last week they discovered (by looking more) that the fungus had grown fairly badly - and went down to Reception to complain. All they said was that there was no other rooms free, that they will get someone into look at it later on in the week, may have to use a "dehumidifier" and re-do the room so they will have to move out if it comes to that.

I would of thought they could of tried to be more helpful? The lads have had to pay medical bills for seeing doctors during the year when they were sick. They lived in unfit conditions. You think that compensation would be offered or something? Kinda surprised the college lacks concern in such cases..

    What ya think?

This seems very suspect. It might be worth having a word with someone in the accomadation office in WIT (down at the end of R block somewhere if I remember rightly) and see what they have to say about this.

I think you should go to the Accomadation Office with your concern.

But, a point I'd like to make is this.

The key factor is moisture because moulds and fungi need it to grow. As a result, moulds and fungi are most often found in basements, kitchens and bathrooms.

In modern buildings, moisture is present as the result of :

    - flooding,
    - leaks in the roof or plumbing,
    - sealed buildings that do not allow excess moisture to escape,
    - sources such as cooking facilities, showers, etc., or
    - excess humidity.

The first 2 points need to be dealt with by a plumber.

The last 3 above points are due to the occupants. If the occupants don't simply open a window to allow fresh air in you will not only have trouble with fungi build up but your health is at risk too.

There working on it all next week. Apparently, using the dehumidifier, treating the fungus and re-painting the room.

Like I said in another Thread.... Manor Village is disgusting!!!!

Well the guy who had the transplant has informed Manor he will be leaving due the fact its just to dangerous for his health. They refused, and told him either stay or pay for the year that he would be in breach of the contract!

    Bit harsh eh?

This thread should serve as a further warning to those wishing to stay in Manor Village in future. Make it your last resort, please.

Unfortunately I'm stuck in Manor :( But I've just arranged to move to a different flat.... I'm tellin ya, the people that I live with are DISGUSTING! I'm even afraid to go into the kitchen, with all the fungus :( So, I'm moving flats on Thursday... Hopefully this will be better. But the thing I'm nervous about is, opening the door, to strangers, and saying, "Hi, I'm moving in?"

OK well they re-done the appartment and since moving back in, the fungus has started to grow again on the sitting room wall behind the TV. They went down stairs and were informed that they hired a contractor to look at it and they came up with the conclusion that the dampness was their (the residents) fault cause they have the TV & PS2 on to much and it generates heat causing dampness. They also informed them the heat needs to remain on 24/7 for the problem to stay away.

They complained to Students Union who have said that the problem is well known and is caused possibly by a leak down in the car park (apparently a car was damaged their last year due to the leak). They will look into it tho

SO Manor are saying that.... for there to be no dampness... they have to cut out the telly?! Bull****..... AND that the heat needs to be on.... And what?! Manor would pay for that would they LOL!!! They must know how much lekky the heaters use up!!!

OK well people, Manor have found out about this topic (probably from Students Union) and aint one bit happy (apparently) and are claiming that its not true. They printed out my posts in particular, highlighting the case to the lads in the flat and are requesting that I speak to them.

Received some advise on what to do next, so I dont think there is any need for alarm. Just gotta check over my posts and make sure there is nothing thats not true.

Students Union will be visiting the flat (and others) tommrow to look at the problems reported by them (and others). I may pop-in also.

From what I can see, and iv had them checked by others, there is nothing un-factual about the posts made on this topic by me. Some were my opinion, from fact about what was said by Manor Students who have been having some unfortunate problems with Manor. Other posts were actual events that have taken place in Manor according to some of Manors Residents.

It is clear that the particular group of residents I speak about, are not the only ones who are not happy with the quality of living at Manor. This is clear from posts here, which can also be seen from Manor. I am not responsible for whatever anyone else says, or claims, in their posts.

Anyway, ill leave the topic die away to prevent further trouble. The orignal post was made to get advise from people who may have had similar experience either in or not in Manor Apartments. It continued that way, and was nothing but actual events that took place. It was not in anyway created to damage the well-being of the Manor Village Apartments. Neither post was created to do this either. Whatever others have said, have nothing to do with me.

    Thanks for understanding.

Well tonight I walked in to collect my bags (left them there earlier) and the security guard asked who I was, and when I told him, he said I was the "prick from tramore" who "wrote stuff up about me on the internet" and told me to leave that I was "barred" and that I lied about staying in Manor to him. When I explained politely (in the middle of his shouting) that I amended my posts and apologised glady he said he "didnt care" and that I was "bared" as I was a "prick" and that it was "none of my business" what he was doing while on guard (I had earlier stated he was watching a soccer match, which I removed at a request).

Disapointing reaction, espicaly since I complied with their request to remove certain posts. I honestly never expected that a simple discussion on Manor Village (which gave rise to people stating how they felt about the place) and problems with peoples apartments would sperk such a row. Even at that, to be abused by a security guard (an elderly man) as a result of it - is very supprising and shocking behaviour. *shrrugs*

Wow, that's certainly a little bit unfriendly! I don't fully understand though, you have only been criticising the accomodation, not this particular security guard? I don't really understand why he would have gotten so agitated.

I guess I can think of worse places to be barred from than Manor Village!

Some friends of mine live in Manor and I have been a regular visitor to their apartments, so iv seen a lot and heard a lot! I guess Manor didnt like me talking about the problems the lads faced in their apartments (which at the moment, im not allowed to discuss anymore then already discussed) and someone made a comment about the security, and I wrote back to this mentioning when I was there they were watching a match on the TV.

Apparently, management read this and gave out to the security guards who now have a grudge against me for saying what I did. At their request, I removed the comment and apologised - not only to try get them out of any trouble, but also because I had lied to security and told them I was a Manor resident (to avoid having to pay to use their photocopier / being a visitor). Thought it was a fair way to end the whole thing, and leave it at that.

Now one of the security guards banned me and shouted the abuse. I dont recall refering to anyone by name, or description - like some had done before me - just by job title (Security). Fair enough they were annoyed about it all, but I was still shocked at his reaction and banning - considering I agreed to their request to remove / clean up my earlier posts.

But ya, I agree with your last statement there. Not to bothered, as anyone I know who lives there is moving out within the next few weeks.
