    Hi,
I'm looking to start some sort of art training (maybe in the style of cartoon images, graphics). Where do I start?
    I'm in Galway at present.
I'm pretty handy with a pencil but have no training and would like to take it back up as a serious hobby or maybe more.
Are there classes out there in graphical art or would art be enough as a basis? are there different types of art courses out there and where?

    Cheers,
    LP.

    Anyone have information on this?
I've posted to the graphic design forum too and got some pointers on self teaching tutorials online but it's more on how to use applications, I'd also like to learn more about drawing/art skills themselves, I'd prefer a course too and not from a book, I think learning from a pro face to face would be more beneficial than a book or online.

    Cheers,
    LP.

Try the local art colleges and schools. They probably have all sorts of classes you could take.

GMIT run a part-time and a full time art and design degree course in cluine muire in galway. it provides students with an understanding of drawing, painting etc; The path you decide to take will be up to you.....whether it be graphics/cartoons. This course is well worth considering.....Get a prospectus

    Good luck:D

Thanks very much artieanna and BostonB,
I've had a look, very good, the galwayartscentre looks perfect if it has a course right now, it's website is slightly out of date. GMIT's course looks great too, 6years however, I've asked for more detail.

If anyone has more detail or options please let me know.

If you're looking to self-each the best advice is to simply practice. Pull out what you like and start copying, exploring, sketching... Can't hurt to go along to some life-drawingin classes also.

right on nice advice, except never suggest a novice to copy as youve stated, or i just missed read,i'll continue as ive read what youve stated (no dis. probly miss read- refusing to re read). we don't need replicas . practice practice time time and more time mix in some confidence. put your self in the the lights your the artist plates! just turn on the radio fuc there is some crap played but it has been made, broadcast and once thats happened the artists work has been given legs. live or death of that peice no bother, sure you've gained the confidence to give birth to another.......most teachers ............ with held nick cave playing and 1st reply to a thread.

There's nothing worng with copying, as long as it's just for practice. Obviously, the moment you pass it off as your own creation you're flirting with plagiarism and that's never good, but as regards getting the basic skills down before moving on, it's fine...

Yeah I'd have no problem copying in order to get some practice. Sometimes I find the ideas for new stuff are my problem, I lack in the creative side of things but I have the drawing skill I think.

I'm starting a 10 week course in the Galway Arts Centre this eve, Life Drawing, this is the starter. I want to learn some techniques.

I'll let you know how it works out.

    Thanks for all your help.

    just an update.
The course I mentioned in the Galway Arts centre has just finished. It was excellent, drawing with pencils and charcoal or nude models, learned alot, not too much teaching really but we were given tips along the way, a full 1.5 hours drawing per night for 10 nights I think. Well worth doing. Everyone there were beginners, some better than others but no pressure.
It's back in May I think.

I've just found another with the Galway Technology Institute, it's oil painting and they also do Graphic design.
