Posting without stamp

Ok, I feel a bit stupid about this, but today I went to the post office to post 2 letters. I needed a stamp for one and the other was freepost. Not thinking very clearly I posted the non freepost one first and then realised what i had done when I went to buy a stamp and I was holding a freepost envelope. It wasn´t really worth making a fuss over. I´m just wondering what will happen to it. And no, my address isn´t on it.

Once it is in the system, An Post have to deliver it. It might be delayed slightly.

I don't know if it's still the case, but years ago if a letter had no stamp the addressee was asked to pay for it.

Sometimes they still deliver it, don't know if they have to or not

I've always wondered if it could be a good scam to send a letter without a stamp but reverse the sender and adressee adresses in the hope they would return to sender. Could work!

A good few years ago ( when I was but a young nipper) I sent a letter to my friend with no stamp and sure enough it arrived on time.
They had stamped "NEXT TIME USE A STAMP" on it but apart from that slight humiliation, it got there!

    Conor.

Thats what i thought happened as well. It doesn't seem worth the trouble though.

OP,if you want to see what happens, mail an envelope to yourself without a stamp and see if it gets delivered.

I did that before. If it has a return address on it, you get it back and they charge you double. If it doesn't, they delay it for about a month and then post it.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing that (mailing something to myself and seeing what happened). Also I remember hearing that the addressee had to pay for it, but these days there´s often nobody at home when the postman calls so I don´t see that happening. It wasn´t very important, in fact, I was contacting somebody I hadn´t in a while so maybe it was a sign or something.

IIRC the addressee had to pay double the postage if they wanted it.

They don't charge the addressee anymore.

Just checked this out. While everything used to get delivered, that is not the case anymore. If a letter is found without a stamp and there is a return address then it is supposed to be returned to the sender. However, sometimes they get through. It is a bit of a lottery.

    Ah.. couldn't resist!

Uhm, its good to see that An Post have a sense of humour with the, "next time use a stamp".

This was done quite widely in UK ten? years ago until the Post copped it and stopped delivering/ charging.

    lol, I can't believe they actually have a rubber-stamp for that :D
I wonder what other stamps they have, perhaps an An Post insider could fill us in.
