On the 9 o clock RTE NEWS I heard that David Ervine was dead, just while Anne Doyle was wrapping up she said he was not dead. Thats a cock up.

After all that I hope he lives a long life!!!!!

yeah my mum just told me about that... we watched the beginning of the news together and were talking about how sad it was that David Irvine had died! i can`t believe they f***ed it up so badly!! That's unbelievable how they could cock it up so much!

I hope David Irvine makes a full recovery, I always liked him!

He's critical after a stroke or heart attack. A good few news agencies have incorrectly stated he died, so not entirely a major cock up on RTÉ's part.

Same as 1huge1, I didn't see the correction at the end of the news. I only noticed that the RTE website reported him as 'critical' with an update at 9:31. I assumed the website was wrong.

    That's a huge cock-up.

I'm sure he'll get a laugh out of his demise when he recovers.

Well they still think he's dead as of 5 mins ago.

I still think it was a cock up and I'm sure someone will get taken down a peg or two. I'm sure when you are announcing the death of someone there are a few steps to follow and it looks liked they were not followed. I wonder did the beeb fall for it?

    BTW Happy NY DMC.

There is usually a protocol - ie confirm the death has occured by phoning the hospital to which he was admitted.

Alan O'Partridge : "Just to reassure you, David Ervine is not dead. It was a humorous intro into a weather report which seems to have been taken a bit too literally by one or two viewers… and a newspaper. So, just to repeat, David Ervine is not dead… unless he went in the night and is yet to be discovered by the nurses."

FFS!! I saw the start of the 9o'clock news and later on I was berating Sky News for having no mention of it!
Hopefully he'll recover fully and chuckle at this. I always thought he was a great man and it was nice to hear so many people speaking well of him.

According to the BEEB it was a statement released in error by someone in the North.....

Funny, RTE don't have a link to the full news prog, as they usually do. Just the individual reports.

But who? There's nothing on RTE, BBC or politics.ie to say who this statement came from. RTE should have had more sense and done the most rudimentary of checks before rushing this to air.

This is not the first time that this has happened with RTE and it is very very bad management/ journalism or whatever you could describe it. I, too, could not believe why Sky and BBC News 24 did not have it on their networks. Rte website also reported that he had died but no other website had!!

This morning RTE are trying to brush it under the carpet by saying that "it was incorrectly reported" - WRONG - it was incorrectly reported by RTE!!

If SKY and the BBC could get it right, why could RTE not??

They need to investigate it fully and isue an apology to David Irvine's and/ or his family as well as a general apology to all the viewers.

Mossy, I agree with them. RTE are being paid big money to provide us with accurate news. What is wrong with expecting the very basic of standards?

Do you work for RTE by any chance?

no i don't work for RTÉ but it gets very tiring when people slam RTÉ, most of the time because it is RTÉ

RTE have now announced the condition of Saddam Hussein is believed to have deteriorated over the weekend

RTÉ can't accept all the blame, but even so they'll have to find out exactly what decisions were made along the way that got it on air. There's no defence really.

As noted, RTÉ haven't made the bulletin available as usual... but if you check out my post on the TV Forum, you'll be able to find out how to watch the whole bulletin if you want to.

It's understandable that Tommie Gorman had two concrete sources, and that he ran with them - what is utterly inexusable is that disgusting 'retraction' script compiled for Anne, without so much as a hint of an apology and coupled with a glazed over expression and matter-of-factish deliverance, without even an apologetic tone.

We must view this in the context of the evening, when newsroom staff having received the correct information had no idea if he was going to die, and in the context of them having spent the first six minutes of a major television bulletin chatting about him in the past tense.

"He 'apparently' had suffered a heart attack" coupled with an awkward crossing of hands simply doesn't cut it from a state broadcaster - so grossly unprofessional. The script was carefully crafted not just to avoid apologising, but even avoided retracting the earlier information! It simply stated the facts as they now stood - how ignorant, how arrogant and how fundamentally disrespectful.

And to cap it all off, a trademark vision cue feck-up at the close - the director not even having the cop on to confirm with Anne beforehand as to the final shot in the altered circumstances. As if they hadn't messed things up enough. Great work all round.

    My thoughts entirely, well put.
