I am in Co. Meath and recently my aerial on my roof has not been working properly. I am looking at investing in some free to air satellite system but am not sure of what I need and where I could get them. Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Aidan.:)

What sort of channels are you after?

I'd presume you are wanting BBC and ITV.

A FTA sat system will pick up BBC1-4, ITV1-4, BBC News24, Sky News, etc

http://bytelive.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Satellite+General might be a handy link for info.

As minimum, you'd need a dish no less than 60cm with universal LNB. This will be aimed at Astra 2 and Eurobird at 28.2°E.

Then either a FTA receiver if you only want free channels, or a Sky digibox if you plan getting a FTV card. An FTV card is a one off payment card that will also give access to Chan4, five, etc, on top of BBC and ITV. These aren't officially available to anyone outside UK, but can be bought online and through classified papers.

Maplin Electronic usually have good deals on FTA systems. The nearest to you would be Dublin Jervis or Blanchardstown. Entire kit usually 150 to 170 euro

Also check the Sticky thread at the top of this forum for other shops, both bricks n' mortar, and online.

So if I go into Maplin in Dublin I can just get all I need to get up and running? Do they do the FTV cards as well?

www.satone.tv, ftv cards are here, you can try ebay but sky seem to have blocked sellers.

Maplin don't do FTV cards. They will have the dish, the LNB and the FTA receiver.

Ask yourself do you need Channel 4 or five? If you don't, then don't read below :)

As byte said, check classifieds and online, or if you have a relative in the UK who could order one for you. www.freesatfromsky.com

Note: this card only works with a Sky digibox (2nd hand option here) and not an FTA receiver that you would get in Maplins or Lidl (when they have them on offer).
