ADSL router - u.tv

    Hi,

Quick question, hopefully someone might be able to help.

I've just got my line set up for broadband, with utv internet who have supplied a Voyager 210 ADSL router. There was some trouble with the phoneline, but after a visit from eircom it's now synching.

My problem is that I can't seem to configure the router to actually access the internet. Unfortunately, I've mislaid the installation guide that came with the router and the documentation on the accompanying CD seems to be PC only.

I'm using a powerbook running 10.3.9. I've connected to the router via ethernet. However, I've tried to get into the configuration of router through a browser (using the http://voyager.home and http://192.168.1.1 addresses) but with no luck. It keeps telling me that it can't connect.

I'll probably trying ringing u.tv tomorrow about it, but in the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong, please let me know. Also, it'd save me about half an hour on hold, listening to Julian Simmonds thanking me for holding.

    Chhers

You could also try 192.168.0.1, as that's often the default IP address of new routers.

    Thanks for that.

I actually managed to access the routers configuration thing through the browser. However, it required going into network preferences and disabling the connect using PPPoE checkbox. So I go to the connect screen for the router (through the browser) and enter my username and password. However, I'm now unable to connect, which I'm guessing is because I'm supposed to be using PPPoE (according to the information sent by UTV).

    Any ideas? :(

i use u.tv on a powerbook ... the router is addressed as voyager.home, or 192.168.1.1

when you browse to this address, you should see BT Config. Manager

you should have a broadband account name and password ... can't remember if these were sent by email, or on a page with the router ... if you don't have these details ... you may just have to hold for u.tv support (i have found it OK)

enter these details into the relevant boxes, and click on connect ... all going well, the router should now have internet access, you will see this reflected on the Internet LED on the router...

if you are not getting this far, it most likely is account/password related ... the process for connecting doesn't change from PC to Mac

if you do get this far, you will also have to enable Wireless access on the router, if you plan on using wireless devices (like your powerbook) ... as best i can remember, the wireless access was painless, and required no config other than entering the key labelled on the router itself

    good luck:)

The Powerbook should be set up to obtain its information from the Voyager modem/router. Leave the PPOE option on the Powerbook disabled, you don't set this here it's already configured in the modem !

So in System Preferences / Network / TCP/IP set it to DHCP and click apply now check the Proxies Tab and make sure it's set to Manual and none of the options are ticked. This should enable you to log into the Voyager using a web browser to 192.168.1.1 .

The Voyager has two lights for the actual internet connection:

1 marked DSL which should be lit and steady and 1 marked Internet which should also be lit and steady. If the Internet one is not lit then the modem has not logged you on to u.tvs internet service. Go to basic setting in the modem config page and enter your supplied username - which will be something like <myname>@utvbb or similar - and the password. Ring their support line if you've forgotten these.

Once you get the internet connection to work then we can deal with the wireless end of things. Let's know how you get on.

Thanks for all the help guys. I finally managed to get the connection sorted - after contacting UTV, I had to go into the advanced settings of the Configuration Manager to change the VPI and VCI settings, and set up PPPoE on the modem. So that's what was causing the problem, apparently.

And, double good, I've got the wireless set up (I'm using the Airport Base Station, so that was straightforward enough).

So, after six months of dial-up, I've got a lot of YouTube to catch up on ...

    Thanks again!
