Who will be Pat Kenny's Late Late Show successor???

This is probably 10 to 15 years off, but while watching Craig Doyle on Test the Nation on New Year's Day, I got to thinking that he'd make an excellent successor for Pat Kenny on the Late Late Show.

While Tubrity is being lined up for the spot, Craig Doyle is better able to rip the pi55 out of people, handle an unexpected situation, is far less annoying, better looking and convinced Cameron Diaz to appear on a holiday program when his crew bumped into her while filming.

Are there any other contenders out there??

Must agree fully, he would be an excellent choice (seen that Cameron Diaz interview, was excellent and she seemed very taken aback by him).

10-15 years, oh please god now. Knowing R.T.E however they will veer completly away from the right choice and go with blind loyalty (Tubbery).

    Tubbery is such a sh!thead...............

The reason I say 10 to 15 years is based on Pat kenny's age - he's 59 this month. But if he goes the way of Gay Byrne (retired from the Late Late Show at 65) there's just six years of Kenny left!!

Plenty of time to start a Craig Doyle campaign!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

Wow kenny is 59 fair play to him he looks younger

really hope its not tubridy though i doubt it as the late late seems a bit to serious of a role for him (he tries to act funny...)

eddie hobbs come on people you know you want him

    haven't seen Craig Doyle.

Is ripping the piss out of people a big part of the job? I think I'd be good at it so....

Jebus H Christ (on a bike with no brakes) Doyle???????

I'd give it to Dara O'Brien and tweak the format so it was more like Letterman and less like Public Service Broadcasting with music and lame humour.

    Mike.

Well he was ripping the piss out of the taxi drivers and models on Test the Nation - I call this a good thing!! It shows he has the wit and edge to make a good Late Late Show host... Unlike the Plank...

    Why do they keep plank?

What is the reason they keep offering him huge contracts? Are they just afraid to have some balls and take a chance? The majority of people I know don't find him a good interviewer.

I'm not an avid watcher of the Late Late (largely because of Plank), is he better on Radio?

    Rte have no balls.

Yeah Kenny is much better on radio. he is a current affairs guy pretending to be into stupid entertainment guests and it doesn't work

Craig Doyle would be a good choice

In 10 to 15 years that Rubik's Cube solving robot off the toy show might have had a few upgrades and they could use it to replace Pat without anyone noticing.

Ah, it struck me like an egg poacher in the smuck!

Shirley temple bar, all dapered down like he/she/it is now and....walla, we have the future of The Late Late Show?

Good God no - the very notion of Doyle regularly appearing on our screens with his smarmy attitude, smug face and hideously slurring sath Dublin accent is enough to turn your stomach.

Now that he's finally realised that his UK television work as soft-t Irish wonderboy is drying up, he's slithering his way into Irish broadcasting through the likes of the fantastically pretentious, vacuous and self-promoting 'The Craig Doyle Show', laughably smug Iarnród Éireann ads, and now token pretty boy presenter of Test the Nation. And just as with Diarmuid Gavin (although a pleasant guy in that instance), RTÉ are riding on the back of a UK success in spite of him now being a thoroughly dated product.

Doyle for whatever reason has an incredible ability to be so spectacularly irritating - he's the perfect counterpart to Laura Woods. They should take it in turns to present the Losho - that way we could all neatly avoid them with minimum effort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭OFDM

Of course, if it was down to me to pick the presenter, I'd personally go a completely different route and pick either Grainne Seoige or Aoife Ni Thuarsig - there's no reason the LLS presenter has to be a bloke...

I'd love to see Craig Ferguson. He currently presents the Late, late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS in America. I know it'll never happen but I can dream.

That thing just smashed the cube to bits without actually solving it!

There could always be more than one presenter

I agree with Mike though. Dara o Briain would be an excellent choice!
I'm coming to like that idea better than Doyle. I know he'd be good for the entertainment interviews but how would Dara handle the heavy stuff that's part of the Late Late Show though??

Just think what it could do to Brendan O'Carroll the next time he goes on the show.

Craig Doyle? Craig ****ing Doyle? What are ye made? Surely this is an post by an RTE Executive to Test The Nation on Craig ****ing Doyle. He was ****ing terrible on Test The Nation. I mean I hate and I mean I hate Philph ****ing Scochfeild but Craig Doyle didn't even come close to him as a presenter.

What about Ray D'arsy? or someone one new.

The idea of getting someone from the list of BBC, RTE, TG4 or TV3 is stupid. No one new Gay Byrne when he started doing it.

The Late Late Show is a difficult show to do. You have Light Entertainment and Hard hitting Current Affairs. In the words of Carr (Comedian Guy) "This is the only show where you have to go to the middle east to get light entertainment".

    Seriously Craig Doyle, FFS.

Next you be suggesting Mark Cagney

They should let someone fill in for Pat for a while, they always do it on the American Chat Shows. Pat should go sick for a while.

    Dave Fanning?
    Lucy Kennedy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

I dont mind Doyle, prepare to see a lot more of him in the coming months as he's doing the six nations for the BBC. Dara O'Broin is too light hearted for it IMO. Tubridy is a gimp. Fanning's great on the radio talking about 'media', not sure he fit the bill on the LL. Seoige is soul-less. How about Joe Duffy....LOL, can you imagine!
I bet Gerry would love to do it, tiz well possible too.
Question: Why is Kenny still doing when no one I've ever spoken too likes him? Fair enough he's good on the radio but by Christ he's wooden on TV. Does no-one in RTE realise this?

Miriam O Callaghan for me. The lady oozes class, can do the serious and the lighthearted as well as each other and she makes my knees knock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,854 ✭✭✭zuutroy

I'm convinced she isn't human. About as much carisma as the the car of that name, and no screen presence.

Patrick Kielty?? There were rumours of him taking over from Gaybo before the plank got the gig...

The only thing oozing out of her is kids! She's pops one out every couple of months.

    Mmmm oooozze.

Seriously the Late Late is dead to me. They'd need a major major change to get me to tune in.

Dara O'Brian maybe... but for a laugh what about Tommy Tiernan?

Anybody but Craig Doyle. He's a total git. I wouldn't buy fruit from him cause he looks like he'd have it poisioned. Totally stuck up his own hole. So smug it's sickening. Thinks he's God's gift.
In fairness to Tubridy he's grown into his show. He's much better at the light entertainment than Pat and I now prefer to watch TT than the LLS. He's still slightly annoying at times but not cringe producing like Pat. God it's like watchiing a live version of the Office with him at times. Having said that Tubridy still not good enough for the serious stuff.
I think D'Arcy should get it, well able to do the light entertainment stuff and the music. His serious side isn't shown that much on the radio apart from the road safety thing but I'd still give him a go above Doyle or Tubridy

Miriam O Callaghan suffered badly with the second series of Saturday Night

I think she could do better. But I think she would be a mistake, remember Pat was the Anchor of Today Tonight.

Eamonn Dunphy I think could do it, he did it on his own short lived show.

Dara O'Brien would be an interesting replacement.
I'd actually like to see Eddie Hobbs presenting it though.

I hope to God that Tubridy doesn't get it though, he's the most annoying little runt I've seen on tv and is show is absolute muck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭OFDM

Dara O'Bríain and Ray D'arcy seem to be good choicesm D'arcy especially now that he's had plenty of experience on radio post The Den/Blackboard Jungle/You're a Star...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Give it to Ray D'Arcy then. I'm sick of that drooling Uncle Fester look-a-like Dara O'Bríain.

On the other hand however if DOB did get the LLS then the edited repeat would only be 20 minutes long after they'd cut out all his 'ehhhhhhing'.

David McWilliams is definitely sniffing around the Plank's job. Only in modern Ireland could we make an economist a national celebrity. A concept as bad as the 'celebrity astrologist'... *sigh*.
Anyhoo, I'd like to see D'Arcy get it myself. On his radio show he seems to be able to achieve a balance between the heavy stuff and lighter, more trivial matters. Some people may have doubts about his ability to handle the really serious issues but I think he could pull it off. And he seems like a genuinely nice bloke to boot.
I definitely would not like Ryan Tumbelty to get it, the guys a creep, don't blame that guy trying to run him over.
Other no-nos -Gerry 'Oo-er missus' Ryan, Craig 'God Save the Queen' Doyle, and Dara 'Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh' O'Briain.

The only person I can think that would be worse than the male bimbo Craig Doyle is the king of smarm Mark Cagney.

I take it Craig Doyle's woefully inept showing when he tried (and failed) to present live coverage of the last Olympics on BBC has already been forgotten about then?

Miriam's not bad imhoe. I enjoyed her show this summer. As for Craig Doyle....Noooooooooooooo! Pat Kenny is fade-into-the-set boring but Doyle makes me want to throw something at the screen! He'd fit right in on some annoying, cheesy American reality TV show.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 350 ✭✭Ray777

Has anyone mentioned Marian Finucane yet? Or Vincent Browne? Matt Cooper, maybe?

Somehow, I can't see Pat Kenny continuing for too much longer. My guess is that he'll quit in 2009, having served ten years on the show. His departure can't come soon enough. I hate when people criticise him for the whole 'Plank' thing. He's a good journalist, and a very studious, well prepared interviewer - which is excellent for his radio show, but doesn't translate well onto a light entertainment television interview. If the interviewer knows every little detail about the interviewee, all spontaneity (the very lifeblood of live television) goes out the window.

Maybe the Late Late should be axed when Kenny eventually quits. They don't seem to be able to attract good guests anymore. I don't actually think that's Kenny's fault. People just don't want to appear on chat shows anymore, unless they have something to plug. All they ever seem to have on the Late Late now is people who recently appeared on a British reality show. The halcyon days of Peter Ustinov, Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, etc are gone. If the absolute very best you can hope for is Ricky Tomlinson doing an identical interview to the one he gave on Parky the previous week, you have to wonder... what's the fúcking point?

Incidentally, did anybody else watch that Late Late comedy special the other week? Forgetting about the presentation and content for a moment, that show really highlighted how horrible, pretentious and dull the current set looks. It's odd that the studio lighting was better in 1987 than it is in 2007. And doesn't that late '90s set look absolutely luxurious (the gold coloured one)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

The orginal set that Pat Kenny had was far better then this one. The Late 1990's one was very gaudy IMO. And the carpet set of the 1980's :(

They should try something like the tubrity set.

But sets a side. What about John Bowman?
