After two hours and 300+ pictures I finally left the Botanic Gardens. Really enjoyed my visit there and was delighed with my new lens (Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro).

For a change today, I decided to use NEF+JPEG which is supposed to take a RAW and a JPEG picture together. Then, disater, when I uploaded them to my computer. Every pic is a JPEG with a copy JPEG. No RAW files at all :(

Anyhow, below are a few and you can see the rest on my flickr account.

    Deadly, some excellent shots there!!!

Getting some great usage out of the new lens.

Lol, did you meet Elven? With her lack of batteries? Hehehe...

Loving the pictures - particularly the flower. Had a look at your web site, some excellent shots!

Didn't see Elven but then I was concetrating so hard on taking pics, Elvis could have passed me by and I wouldn't have noticed :)

BTW This is probably the first time none of my pics have been cropped in PS. Starting to frame my shots a lot better in camera.

Lovely stuff. Really cracking bench pic, ironically enough in a place full of plants and flowers!

I got as far as the car park today and realised I'd left my battery in the charger in the spare room. What a nugget :( If it's half decent weather tomorrow I'll be back up there I think.

was down there yesterday too, but all i had was 400ASA b&w. the palm house was glorious, but the lens started fogging up after about three seconds, unsurprisingly.

actually DarrenG did you notice much condensation?

I got no fogging at all. I usually notice it straight away as I wear glasses and they will fog pretty quickly.

One possible explanation for that is that you have your camera's USB mode set to PTP instead of Mass Storage. When you connect it to the computer, Windows doesn't understand what the NEF files are, so it tries to be clever (the keyword there is "tries") and it extracts the embedded JPEG from the NEF and presents it as an actual JPEG. I'm not sure whether it replaces the NEF with a JPEG or not.

Also, take a look here for more details:

great shots! love the colours in them.

one extremely silly question.. did you have to use a tripod for all of those shots?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭GristlyEnd

Yes a tripod was used for all shots. I can't shoot macro without it as I have shaky hands.

just got my shots back. this was one of the couple of shots i managed to fire off in the palm house before my lens started to fog too much - could only get one shot each time, had to run back out to let it clear before venturing back in again.

That worked out well for you... like the light streaming in from the right.

All you had to do to avoid the fogging is spend a good ten minutes in the cactus bit. Worked for me on sunday. (Finally got back there - with battery, this time...) Pics in my flickr if you're nosey ;) Looks like we have a lot of visitors to the botanics just now!

Funnily enough I tried to shoot RAW + jpg recently and the same thing happened to me that I got two jpg files. Grrr.
