I like to install the motherboard chipset drivers first, then after that it doesn't really matter what order... it's pretty much preference at that point... the first thing I usually want to do is get my display sorted out, then listen to music while I'm setting up the rest of the bits and pieces.

If you have a RAID array or SATA drive, you might need to supply windows setup with a driver disk for them... I don't have either, so I'm not exactly sure what the craic is with this yet.

I hate formatting... I've done it so many times too! I just make sure everything I want to keep has been stored on other drives then I just go for it.

Had a big issue last time cos I didn't have Windows XP Pro. with SP2 disc and you need that to format SATA drives. So I integrated XP and SP2 onto one disc myself (so proud). I also had to get the RAID drivers onto a floppy...

After that it was plain sailing. I always start by installing Anti-Virus & Firewall before I even connect to the web. Decided to go with AVG Internet Security this time (fed up of Norton). Then I install the Windows Updates, Graphic Card drivers, MoBo drivers, etc... I then get my desktop, Start Menu, folders, etc, looking the way I want them to. Finally, I reinstall all my games and favourite software (Tweak XP Pro, FireFox, AdAware, SpyBot, Steam, Daemon, Nero...)

    Then it's done! :)

Copy your current driver folder, that way you have a foolproof set of drivers, you can just update the drivers device by device and point the wizard to the copied folder, works a charm if anything goes awry.

If this bothers you as much as it bothers me, read Tweakhound's guide.

    Found this online:
This is what I consider the proper order to install XP, its updates/drivers/patches and applications:
    1. XP
    2. SP2 [if you didn't make a slipstreamed CD]
    3. Chipset drivers
    4. Video card drivers [run disk cleanup]
    5. NIC/modem drivers

    6. Windows Update, High Priority Updates [SP2 if you didn't download ahead of time]
+ Windows Update, Optional hardware updates
+ Windows Update, Optional software updates [don't load unnecessary items]
    7. Other drivers [try to automatically update first; run disk cleanup]
    8. Backup
    9. Create partitions for documents, digital media, etc.

    10. Major applications. Fully update each application before installing the next.
    11. The rest of your apps [run disk cleanup]
    12. Anti-virus software and update it
    13. Configure e-mail, move 'My Documents' to another drive/partition
    14. Clean up System Tray, organise Start Menu, activate XP
    15. Boot up in Safe Mode, run Disk Cleanup [advanced] and defragment
    16. Backup
    17. Tweak

    18. Backup
