i have a ps2 keyboard plugged into a usb port with an adaptor plug.
    windows xp.

It does detect there is something there i just get a baloon in the system tray to say there was a problem installing the usb device and in device manager it is listed as an un known device under the usb section.
Same thing with a diferent port and a standard usb keyboard and all other usb devices work fine.

any ideas? maybe i could try a generic keyboard driver but google didnt yeild any usable results.

windows has this dirver already built in. Just go to add/remove hard ware and follow the wizard. And just select keyboard when it prompts which device is connected.

This shouldnt really happen though it should be plug and play.

i tried this on my other laptop also , and i get the same error

    "usb device not recognised

one of the usb devices attached to this pc has malfunctioned
and windows does not recognise it............."

so it knows there is something there just not what it is,
i have also tried another mouse and another ps2 keyboard
and i get the same thing.

Just a quick one for you, remove all references of installed keyboards from device manager, then scan for new devices, does it work now?
If not, what brand of keyboard is it? search for drivers.

From my experience, those PS/2 -> USB yokes just don't work with keyboards :(
