New Driver

I am just back from McGuirks in Blanch were they are selling the Taylor Made R5 Dual Driver for €169. I have to say I am very tempted. At the start of the summer I bought the RAM starter set from the same shop and it has really done the trick for me with the driver now good for 220/230 on the range but it is a forged steel driver so I fancy a treat and an extra 30/40 yards would do nicely.

Would this sound like a decent buy? Anybody got one? I am not the best golfer in the world although I have just finished lessons and have dramitically improved. I am just worried that I might be getting a bit too ambitious with my choice of driver. I read somewhere that this club is for more experienced golfers.

Can anybody advise me on this. The price seems like a really good deal and the club certainly feels nice but there is no range facility to try it out so I dont know what to do. What I was looking at was the 10.5 degree, Type 'N', regular flex. Am I making a huge mistake?

    Cheers!

I bought a 10.5 420cc dunlop in Heatons before Christmas.
    €16.
Haven't used it a whole pile yet but it seems to be fine!
I'm sure there is someone in this forum who can advise on that driver!

The r5 driver is a very well reccommended driver. When it was brought, brought out 2years ago it came out at 400 euro. It has gone down in price to 169!!

My advice is go for it. Taylor Made are a good make.

That is a rubbish claim. In fact that driver is aimed towards high handicap golfers.

The best thing to do is to go the Spawell Driving Range and test drive it first before buying it. They have a lauch monitor there which will tell you which flex is compatible with your swing.

    Good luck ;)

Listen to the SwingKing my man, like he says give it a try out at spawell or cellbridge, you'll feel better in your decision then.

Cheers lads, They didn't have an R5 in the spawell yesterday. Instead I got to use a Wilson Deep Red which I didn't like at all, a Callaway X460 which was ok but I didn't exactly love it and a Cobra 460 which was class. Only trouble was all of my shots were going very high. Apparently this was caused due to the club I was using being an offset driver. They said they would have a regular one in on Friday for me to try. At 275 though it was a little steep so I am still interested in hitting a few balls with the R5. I am going to try to get out to Celbridge later today to see if they have one there. I'll let you know how I get on and what I finally decide.

Ok lads, thanks for all the advice. I decided to bite the bullet and buy one without trying it first. I went for the R5 10.5 Draw Regular Flex shaft. I just took it out for a test drive and I have to say I am more than pleased with my purchase. It has added at least 30 yards on to my normal drive and a lot more of my drives are going where I wanted them to go. One thing I did notice though was that a few of them went left which was not typical of my drives with my old driver but I guess that is down to the draw. I guess it will take a bit of getting used to but a few more test runs should iron out any problems.

I have to say though, when they were good, they were great!
