Sounds like a codec problem. Try downloading the K-Lite codec pack and see if that helps.

Other than that try telling us what the actual text of the actual error is so it saves the guesswork.

i have downloaded the program your talking about i will try re install it see if that makes a difference thanks!!

the notice that comes up is " an error has occured and must close windows media player and then it gives u the option to send or dont send the error report! do u kno the one im talking about??

ive tried MPEG files and they play fine alone with MP3! its just avi thats the problem

The avi file is probably causing Windows Media Player to crash because it cannot find the codec. If you download GSpot, load your media file in there, it will tell you what the codec used is and if you have it installed or not. As mentioned, give VLC Media Player a go, it plays everything (or most). :)

Thanks for the help RUU! a wierd thing happened tho! i uninstalled the K-Lite codec and my avi files now play out of windows media again! does the K-lite codec improve quality or anything or should i just leave it as it is now and not bother installing it again unless i need it??

k-lite is a codec pack which allows media player to play a larger variety of formats/codecs in which video is packed
