This is a very general topic but any replies appreciated!!

I recently got broadband installed in my home (after a long 5 year wait) and am looking for ideas on working from home.

I know that there are lots of scams etc out there but would really appreciate any honest info.

I have a background in IT programming/networking/Project Management etc

    Thanks!!

    A

How about an Ebay shop? I haven't set up one myself but have thought about it as a break from the office....just a thought.

Yeah - tried the ebay thing - could never come up with an idea that made any money!! Always made a loss! I'll just have to think harder.

I suppose its one of things - if it was easy to do, we'd all be doing it!

AFAIK Most people who work from home and do not work for a buisness are involved in affiliate marketing. There are plenty of websites out there with guides on how to do this, all you need to know is basic html and how to run a website. TBH it appears to be a bit of a mugs game and takes alot of time and effort to make any returns worth talking about. Your best trying to find a buisness who are recruiting people to work from their homes.

Thanks - Yeah, the problem is that a large % of those businesses are scams. I suppose the traditional way is to get a standard job and then slowly start working from home! There is a huge variation in company policies in this area.
ATM I'm a contractor on a daily rate and if I dont show up, I dont get paid.

You can pick and choose projects.

I don't see how you could make any money from rentacoder as you'll be undercut by people from overseas.

I know lots of people that tried rentacoder and thats exactly what happened!!

With cost of living here its impossible to bid lower than coders in other parts of the world.

When I contracted I did some contracts where I did 3 days a week at home. I didn't like it to be honest.

In theory IT networking jobs should be ideal for home working,
With VPN's, VNC & 1001 other remote access methods.
There is so much that systems administrator/network administrator can do remotely, it just seems that businesses expect a staff presence to carry out these duties.

I believe it is to do with trust, management don’t trust their staff enough to work completely unsupervised, home workers can sometimes feel isolated from the company at times.

Really need to find an employer who is flexible enough to allow some home/home office as well as a few days each month on the business premises.

Yeah - true. Seems to be all about trust and company policy.

My girlfriend works in a really large company and remote working is now
frowned upon because of a couple of staff who took the piss. Now its
really hard for her to work from home..

Friend of mine works for IBM and works 4 days a week from home and 1 day in the office - she's been doing it for four or five years now and it seems to work well - they keep promoting her anyway.

Another guy I know works in Blackrock and his office is in Cape Town!

It really is all about trust and one or two people dicking around can ruin it for everybody else unfortunately.

I just stumbled across www.odesk.com this morning - might be worth a look. Seems a little more professional than rentacoder.
