Xbox update problems

A friend of mine is having alot of trouble getting his 360 online. He is asked to update when he tries to connect to xbox live. When he tries to update the 360 tells him to check his settings. However we both checked out his settings and they are fine (he's using hardwired broadband). We then rang Xbox live support and were told to download the update to a cd and then update from the disc. We used both DVDR and CDR discs. The problem we have now is the 360 will not acess the disc. The disc shows up in the disc tray as a "mixed media disc" and we were told to access the disc on the media blade of the 360. However we cannot access the disc. The "A" button is doing nothing. Can anybody shed any light on this? Customer care had us on hold for nearly half an hour and couldn't come up with anything of use. My head is melted.

Nice one Sarah, we'll give it a go and see how we get on. I might eventually be able to kick his ass on R6 Vegas sometime this century!
    Thanks again,
    J.

The general concensus seems to point at the Firewall. We've already rang his little brother (he's 22 so he's well up on this PC malarkey) and he is coming over tomorrow to sort it for us. We would probably wreck his entire PC trying to change the firewall (we're not very technically minded)!
    Thanks for the help,
    J.

Aye tis in your router options....

    192.168.1.254 (think thats eircom)

    Then disable router firewall!

I dont think you need to turn off the firewall completely. I'm sure there are settings for opening/forwarding some ports. Or changing the NAT to open. I think I just turned off the filter for NAT Redirection and it worked

The Firewall was lowered and he's now a happy chappy. Many thanks to all those who responded. May all his 24 hour Xbox Live binges now be on your heads!
    Thanks again, J.
