***Could a Moderator fix my thread title to "waiting" thanks***

I have a Wii and am still awaiting the Playstation 3, Just like I own the Playstation 2 and had the GameCube along side it.
Anyway my real question is, who here is waiting for the Playstation 3?
And who here has grown tired of waiting and have bought a 360 instead, and have no plans for the Playstation 3?

Basically, where do you stand right now on terms of the Playstation 3, the launch date and it's rumored second delay, the price, and the consoles life span and potential for the future?

    I'll be getting a PS3. Wouldn't get a 360 though... I have a PC so what's the need? :p

Won't be buying it when it comes out though. I'll wait until some proper games are out for it. And then I'll probably wait some more for a price drop... ;)

As much as I agree with you that remark will get eaten alive soon.
Anyway back on topic, pricing doesn't really bother me.
If I was short on cash maybe but let's be honest, it's not that expensive, the 360 wasn't much cheaper at launch.

Did anyone else here pre-register their account with the Playstation online network? You are allowed to register now so as your user name won't be taken when the times comes that you actually get the Playstation 3.
A bit extreme I know but I went ahead and did it anyway.

Not so much waiting it out, but just cant be bothered to buy the xbox or wii at the moment.

I'm not going to deny that I'm a bit of a playstation fan as well. Playstation 1, Playstation 2 and PSP have all been very good to me and the PS3 appeals to me as well due to its impressive looking spec and the good games that the playstation series always seem to produce. I'm not an avid enough gamer to consider myself an expert on all gaming things but I do reckon the PS3 will once again become the best selling console. I'd say there are a good few people like me in Ireland tbh.

So, to answer your question. Yes, I probably will be waiting to buy a PS3, but waiting for a while until the initial release mania has died down a bit

It was €200 cheaper at launch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

True between 150 and 200 euro cheaper.
WiFi built in on the premium PS3 model VS none on either X-Box model,
20 GB HDD as standard on basic model with 60GB on premium VS 20 GB at most on the 360 thus far, As of yet there is no charge for online play with the PS3 VS X-Box Live's €60 for a years subscription, Near enough full backwards compatibility with the PS3 VS 309 titles with the 360, and I won't even bother trying to debate Blu Ray and HD-DVD.

I know none of us asked for most of the above but that's what we are getting for our money on launch in comparison to the 360 on launch.
As far as I'm concerned Blu Ray or not you get more for what you pay.
And to be honest I'm not about to moan and bitch over a measly €200.
It's a long term investment after all as is the 360 and the Wii.

I am the biggest gadget nut in midlands!

Been counting down the days for last 6 months, cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I WON'T CAMP OUT AS MY MISSUS WOULD KICK ME OUT FOR GOOD IF I DID:eek:

By the way i have been gaming since the oldest nintendo and even before them the Atari.

When xbox1 and 360 were launched i got those immediately but now i offloaded those as i think the Playstation brand is still pure quality and still above all competition for that reason.

I was going to wait for the PS3 but went for the tesco deal with the 360. I have had the ps1, ps2 and psp. But I thought at 337 for gears of war bundle you cant go wrong, I may get the PS3 when its gets cheaper, but I cant see myself spending 700 euro in smyths for the PS3, ( Smyths are selling PS3 with a sony game for 700, doesnt sound as appealing as 630 tbh)

Also it seems as if alot of the PS3 exclusives are making their way to the 360 such a assasins creed and virtua fighter. I think the 360 is the way to go for the moment if you want the machine mainly for gaming, and it has a great games library atm. Mainly until blu ray discs become more widespread, PS3 games are more abundant, and the machine gets cheaper Ill buy it.

Does anyone know the allocation of machines for Ireland for launch? I suppose thats perhaps unanswerable, with perhaps a later launch date than march.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Oh no they will launch in March.....Ireland's allocation being 14 consoles.:D
nah it won't be that bad......
Anyway, why wouldn't the 360 have the best library of games?
It's been out over a year now, I would be worried if it didn't.
And you can't really say anything about the Playstation losing exclusiveness, anything even halfway decent on the 360 is either on another console, or on the PC as well.I mean there is even talk of the legendary fricken "Gears Of War" being put on the PC.

And most of the assumptions of exclusive PS3 titles going to the 360 are just that, we won't be able to tell what's exclusive and what's not until the games are actually released. And even then that's saying nothing.Look how long it took the original X-Box to get it's hands on GTA and MGS 2 Substance.

Anything could happen really when you think about it.
Nothing's in concrete until all three next gen consoles are out in all regions.

I think THAT kind of comment will get you eaten alive. 'Brands'? They aren't jeans. It's not a case of 'belonging'. Well, it shouldn't be.

I think the 360 and the PS3 at launch are two totally different beasts. The PS3 technically has everything on board, all the bells and whistles (at least the 60gig version does). But it's at a premium and a year and a half after the 360.

The 360 came out and it gave you choice. Now, I suppose it depends on how much money you have whether you appreciate choice or just see it as clunky. But for me the ability to add on stuff like wi-fi later on was more much pleasing on the wallet.

The announcement of Zephyr means (xbox360 version 2 http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055036743) with hdmi on board and a 120gig hard drive is an admission by MS that things have moved on and that the PS3's superior hardware list has risen the bar for techheads.

BUT, the current 360 with a wireless adaptor fulfills all my needs. I have no need for hdmi or any 'next gen' dvd format.

Saying that, when the PS3 drops in price, I might try the 'brand'.....

Like me really, I know people in the XtraVision I have it booked in and I'm number uno on that list. And I have a booking in Smyth's on Jervis Street and they have already said I'm covered. And I'm number 1 on the interest list at GAME on Dawson street for when they start taking pre-bookings.

    I can't fail, well I hope not.
I got the Wii easy enough so if we get a decent amount, or at least 1 per store I'll be getting it.

Its nothing more than a rumour, not an announcment and there have been plenty of similar ones over the last year.

I have been waiting for the PS3 for years. The latest delay was the last straw and i bought a XBOX360. I wasnt sure if i should splurge the cash on it but am so glad i did now. I always intended getting the PS3 when it eventualy arrives (no.1 on a pre order list) but im not too bothered when it turns up now becuase at the moment the XBOX games are just as good. I reckon the PS3 will be alot better in the long run though.

Anyway my real question is, who here is waiting for the Playstation 3?

    Not me.

    I do hope Sony-
    (i) manage to f*ck up something-or-other yet again
(ii) get up to their old tricks with trickling units in Europe
(iii) and, basically, get theirs this time around.

They've had it coming long enough by now.

    EDIT, an hour later:

And what do you know... here it comes (unsurprisingly, at this stage):

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=22271

    More, Sony, more... :D

    Lets do the Math's:

If you head down to your local Smyths on launch day you will find:

    PS3
    Premium Console: 630 euro
    Extra controller: 50 euro
    3 Games(@E75 each) 225 euro

    Total 905 euro

    Or

    Xbox 360 premium
    Extra controller
    Gears of War
    Need for Speed Carbon
    Pro Evo 6
    PGR3

    Total 499 Euro

In my reckoning this will make PS3 nearly double the price of an xbox 360 and same amount of kit on PS3 launch day. Now if you are a fool and seriously think that its worth paying double the price so you can play blu-ray movies and have 60GB hard drive that you wont be able to fill then fire ahead.

Before people start calling me an xbox fanboy id like to say: I never owned an original Xbox, I have bashed MS on many occasions and I have owned a PS1 and a PS2 and recently bought a PSP. I will buy a PS3 some day but there is no way I am spending close to a 1000 euro to get one.

So in answer to the original question. I am waiting it out till march..... 2009.:D

that 360 bundle is gone afaik. if not, it will be in march. also, PGR3 is an old game now. still looks great and all, but do you think sony wont be pimping the free GT HD thing? also, nfsc and pro evo6 are out on ps2. chances are, if you're in any way smart, you'll want games that take advantage of your €600 machine.

Oh? What about the no-entry-level-pack-for-Ireland bit then? Have you patched your crystal ball? :D

Come on, projectmayhem, we all know which side your bread's buttered ;)
that 360 bundle is gone afaik. (etc.)

Since M$ didn't need to table nice bundles for Xmas'06 (in the absence of PS3 on European shelves), but still did (to continue growing their installed user base as fast as possible), that argument is about as effective as p1ss1ng in a violin, tbh: you can bet that M$ is going to table some very delectable offers for Europe come March. (not that I'll be interested in any/or, note)

I wonder if the no-entry-level-pack-for-Ireland bit has anything to do with HDCP? (reminder: entry-level PS3 is not HDCP compliant) Or, since Ireland has supposedly the highest penetration rate for anything PS, this is just further evidence of Sony's arrogance ("they'll buy it no matter what" -approach).

Of course, they might yet change their minds, and I'll be the first one to give them the benefit of the doubt :)

Of course, we'll first have to witness whether PS3 is indeed released in March, won't we? ;)

EDIT - remove that last comment, it's pointless. Of course Sony will release in March: they've got more than enough inventory/oversupply in the US, LOL! :D

I imported mine and that news only makes me happier that I did, and projectmayhem has said it months ago that that would be the price and that the 20gb model wouldnt release here. This is just giving people here another reason to import, with this and the fact that the Dollar to Euro exchange rate is so good I dont see a reason in not importing other than the warranty issue, which doesnt put me off coz youd be very unlucky for it to brake, there is very little problems with it at the moment.

there was no ps3 at christmas, but the bundles were to sway people over. instead of making them wait until the ps3 does arrive, microsoft's plan was to stop people waiting and force 'em to buy a 360. also, the bundles for new year are here already. 360 + 4 free games (arcade thingy, pgr, pdz & n3)...

I'm amazed at the difference of opinion between here and the American forums I mod. Nearly everyone here has the attitude that if you are buying it you might as well go all out but on the US forums the majority by far say get the 20gb version since the 60gb doesn't give you enough extras to justify the $100.

i mod another forum where most people are from europe or new zealand (not sure why nz is popular, but there you go...) and i'd be fairly sure nearly everyone getting a ps3 there is getting the 60GB model. another forum i go to that has far more americans is split between 60gb/20gb, the main argument being that the 360 is fine with 20gb... no need for the extra costs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

I'd be inclined to go with the 20 gig if it was an option, if I get to the stage where I need more than 20 gigs there'll be much bigger hard drives available anyway, what with it supporting fairly standardised PC drives, and standard PC peripherals through USB aswell which will make up for missing memory card slots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,994 ✭✭✭ambro25

i'm aware that i come accross very fanboyish here (..)

I didn't say that (I'm old enough to differentiate between entusiasm and terminal blinkeritis ;) )
i just think the "omgz sony is teh suk" lark on forums is a bit ridiculous. may as well get stuck in and play devils advocate, and all that...

Fair enough. But as an aside, note that I've been giving out about Sony since way-way-way earlier than when it became the fashionable thing. All to do with their hypocritical corporate practices, with which they started in 2004 and much earlier than the whole Play-Asia / Lik-Sang thing (never mind their badly mismanaged PR).

    Advocate away :)

ya know I played a few 360 games at my mate's house. There were only a few games like oblivan that made me want to get a 360. Otherwise to me the 360 is the same as the ps2. You have to understand that the 360 has available for some time now and most of the games are out. The 360 may last long but I don't belive its going to outlast the ps3. Quite frankly I'd be more worried about Microsoft's next machine whatever it is.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 132 ✭✭parliament

I am a ps1 and ps2 owner. I played the original xbox but nothing convinced me to buy one so I kept going with the ps2. However I'm have decided to go with the 360 and have no regrets so far. My main concern with sony is that they will continue to over hype and under deliver. The evolution from the ps1 to the ps2 was not a major one all we got was a machine with better graphics and a bigger memory card, the online services came to late and not enough was put into making it a sucess so sony decided to cut their losses and tell us that online was in development for the ps3 (after selling the ps2 as this amazing online experience). And from what sony have been doing so far looks like they may repeat the process with the ps3....no on the other hand the progress MS have made has been oustanding. Their first console was a pretty decent effort but they have shown more dedication to the gaming market with their release of the 360, can we expect sony not to maybe just thrown in the towel with the ps3 after one or 2 years and cut back on the development of services (like the ps2) and promise us that they will get it right on the ps4 and it will be the most supercalifragilistic console in the world EVER!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭andyps2.5

If you had a online ps3 you would discover the online homepage www.myplaystation3.com (I'm not to sure of the name). This will be a good site to log on to. It has playable games, downloadable game patches and wallpaper. My point is by March this site will bursting with stuff to look at and try so don't knock the ps3 online features just yet.

Forget the PS3 for a minute...

How can you say they over-promised and underdelivered on the PS2? Have you actually played any games on it for the last 6 years?

Obvious example, but GTA3 couldn't be done on a PS1. It just couldn't. There are so many things about it way beyond the capabilities of the previous generation, and none of them purely to do with graphics.

For every good xbox game there were 5 great gamecube ones and a couple of dozen great PS2 ones. If the PS3 lives up to half of that it will be a fantastic console, not that it necessarily will live up to that but it's far too early to tell, the PS2 sucked for the first year of its lifespan but it went on to become the host to the best selection of games of any console in any generation to be honest.

    @ MikeHoncho,

You can't compare bundles and pricing etc between a launch machine and a machine that has been out a year. This point has been debated loads of times here and it always comes down to people being told the same thing.
    Comparison is impossible.

I meant it can't be compared properly on the level of which console is better value for your money.A year down the line the Playstation 3 could have excellent bundles for a great price also.

I just don't think that point should be used as an "X-Box 1 - PS3 0" type of thing. The people who bought a slightly dearer X-Box 1 at launch when compared to the price of the Playstation 2, wouldn't be swayed by the fact that they can buy a console of the same generation for cheaper. They went to buy the X-box, and that's what they are going to buy.

So whoever wants to get the PS3 will, and should do, with no regrets.

I agree you need to think long term when considering what console your going to get (unless your one of those people who gets all of them). If you like what the ps2 gave you for last 6 years you’re probably going to get ps3 in the hope of getting the same excellence. If have a problem with the ps2 or ps1 than your probably going to get a x360. That is if you haven't got one already. So with the ps2 lasting 6 years you really got to ask the question. How long will the ps3 last? Another 6 years or longer. Sony won't tell you they make the hardware and rarely make games as it is.
