From next Monday the Luas will charge commuters 10 cent more if they use the Luas during Peak hours. I cant believe they can get away with this.

Is this on top of the 2.75% fair hike of Today?

The LUAS operators say it is designed to alleviate rush hour congestion by encouraging people to use the service at different times.

How many people can change their workings hours to be outside peak hours.

Yes because 10c will discourage people. Unfortunately people who use it during rush hour NEED to use it at those times otherwise they

The Luas has already paid for itself surely it should become cheaper no? Also why advertise for people to use it and then tax them on it.

Bang on. Another Stealth tax, that's all it is.

Multiply carriages full of people by 10c each by however many trams run at those times = more profit for Veolia.

It really is a disgrace - might be time for a letter to your TD, and the Minister for Transport

Why not just supply more trams with the profit they are making from it?? This is a better solution to the problem IMHO.

This is a time when the government is trying to encourage people onto public transport at peak times, while the Luas are trying to discourage people from using the service at peak times

This is incorrect. Dublin Bus went up by an average of 2.75% last week, Irish rail went up today and Luas goes up next week. All are totally seperate companies and all have just a single price increase. As for the luas making a profit, this is an operating profit as the line was provided for by the government / tax payers. And sure aren't the workers on these services entitled to a wage increase like the rest of us? - Personnaly I think the Luas is fantastic value for money and beats paying 2.80 per hour parking in the city!

They have apply to minister for transport for the increase on an annual basis and give reasons for the increase. http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/1219/transport.html

The peak-time increase only applies to those purchasing single tickets, not to return tickets, weekly/monthly passes or smart card users. See http://www.luas.ie/news.php for more details. I can't see too many commuters using single tickets - storm in a teacup!

There's a thread over in Commuting and Transport explaining the reasoning for the hike.
