A contact needs a new battery for a really old (unknown) car with a 6volt electrical system.

I'm useless at this stuff and was wondering are these batteries available?

Also is it possible to upgrade to a 12v system and alternator?

Some motor factors stock 6V car batteries. You need to know the make of vehicle as different batteries have different output (Amps).

Yes, you can convert to a 12V system but it can be time consuming and costly and takes away from the originality of the vehicle

theres loads of lead acid cells in maplins, different shapes and sizes, some 6v some 12v and all are recharagable and sealed

There are 6v car batteries you can buy, I would advise against the maplin sealed ones, I really don't think that they would have the amps to start a car. Ask in a motor factors or do a bit of googling something like this http://www.barden-uk.com/automotive-batteries.html

6 volt batteries are readily available but tend to be dearer than the 12 volt. Don't know where you are based but the vintage tractor fraternity should be able to point towards suppliers

MGB's use 6v batteries (two x 6v in series to give 12v) so they should be readily available from the MG crowd. Eg. http://www.mgocspares.co.uk/acatalog/MGOC_Spares_BATTERY_119.html
