I was wondering what is best practice for archiving digital pictures? At the moment I shoot in RAW and I keep them in a folder called “Originals” with subfolders with the date and then name the files with time and date.

    Originals
    …YYYYMMDD
    ……YYYMMDD_HHMMSS-uniquenumber.ext

Then I have a folder with the jpgs.

    Pictures
    …YYYYMMDD
    ……YYYMMDD_HHMMSS-uniquenumber.jpg

    If I edit a jpg I name it YYYMMDD_HHMMSS-uniquenumberA.jpg

I’d be interested to know how others do this. Are there better ways. I am especially interested to hear how people deal with edits.

every shoot i make a folder ie

Spellbound Gig, Voodoo Lounge, 24th May, 2006

    inside,
    two folders
    RAW
    Edited

burn the folder to a cd and archive it on my backup hd. cd goes in special case and done

Location and month, like Tramore Jun06. Raws in that folder and a Converted subfolder with Tiffs and jpegs for use on the web/printing.
Make a ghost of the parent folder from time to time and also burn to DVD when I reach 4Gb ish of files. That leaves me with two copies on two separate drives and one on DVD, three in total.

With me its like this usually
    storagehr6.jpg
So there is usually a folder for the Raw files.
Folder for the converted files (Always Tiff).
And then WIP (Work in Progress) or Edited
folders for images not ready yet.:)

Backup is a bit shady at the moment
but the bulk are backed up on another HD
    and on DVD's also.

My last few machines have been a mess of photos, but I keep telling myself this new laptop will be different.

Raw's get saved to their own folder with date on, tiff's are then edited, and saved with their unique number, and the edit, whether it's version 1, 2 or 3, in colour or black and white etc, then in the same folder, a jpeg version of each.

    It's still a mess...
