Out of curiosity how many views are you getting on your albums in Flickr -- i am heading towards 1,500 -- how do any of you promote your flickr to increase audience ?

I think this counts as promotion ;)

Most people here seem to put it in their sig.

You mean overall... as in the entire set? Current count 24,385 views. Not very high though compared to most.

Mostly my views come from me visiting my contacts streams and commenting and then I get feedback/views/comments in return. Every now and again I do the odd 'group pimp my photo' but only a few times a year for photos I really wanna get feedback on. Mostly I just leave it for my contacts to have a look.

I have just over 15200 views at the moment. I have to confess I don't do a load to promote it really.

That being said, roughly 60% of my photographs are sports related so I fling the link out to interested parties. I also find that people are inclined to come and have a look at my stuff if I have commented/or favourited theirs. In general, I have an RSS reader set up to keep an eye on photos of Brittany, lighthouses, and also of my contacts. This gives me a stream of photos to look at and comment on.

I sort of feel that I don't really exploit the social aspect of Flickr as much as I could but when you go looking for a group to send out a photograph to and the search returns something like 10000 groups, you realise it's very time consuming. I want to get my act together a bit better on that front.

One of the things I have down as a project for the year if I get around to it - was to set up an aggregator for Irish Flickr users - that you'd submit your address to it and the site would update when you had new stuff up. Not unlike a blog aggregator. I just haven't had time to look into it.

Divide the total number of views by the number of pics you have. That'll give you a more accurate view.

I used to stick my fave pics in a lot of groups and look for comments and the like but the whole Flickritis has worn off and I couldn't really be arsed these days. As long as you're happy with your pics that's the main thing.

Constructive criticism is more than helpful if a person wants to improve and the one thing Flickr doesn't do is provide helpful criticism, the comments you get are mainly all gushing and nicey.

Mind you...it's not really supposed to be a popularity contest...

Thanks Calina -- still getting to grips with my SLR in non auto mode -- like others, i sort of use Flickr as an indicator of my progression or regression in photography !

I am in a similar boat to 440Hz in that I have my contacts usually give me their views. Saying that 5K views in 4 months aint to shabby either, roll on the 10K mark soon (I hope!!)

On a serious note tho, I usually post to 2 boards including this one to get "real" constructive critism of pics I post. I'm also pleased with the usual response I get including ways to make the picture better if it warrants it.

Or possibly part of the contract of every Chelsea player is that they sit in front of a computer and review all of Rymus' photos every single day.

Flickr is all about social networking. If you go out and comment on a hojillion people's photos, they'll come back and do the same. Being good at photography is entirely optional. Linking around helps too (my Vistas of Azeroth set was extremely popular on Warcraft forums). If all else fails, install Reload Every, open up your page in a few tabs and set the refresh for 5 seconds. Not that I condone such. :p

I've noticed some people tag there photos with about 30 different names ,then they add their photo to about 30 groups.
If I tag a photo of a wall with ,sadam ,great wall ,tsunami ,dublin . I'm sure I'll get views that have nothing to do with my photo.

One morally corrupt way of getting loads of views is to post photos of women in various states of undress. But then again, that's always been the case. I'll stick to posting loads of shíte for now :D

I had one contact who did that, he put up photos of naked women and wrote about current affairs in their blurbs. I removed him as he made my Flickr NSFW.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

Hojillion. Is that bigger than a bazillion or gazillion?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

This woman made me a contact of hers, but I deleted her after a while as it was indeed NSFW.
    NSFW

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

That is indeed the very essence of NSFW

What I found most disturbing about it was that in the middle of all those photos, there's one of her dad holding a giant fish!?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

Yeah, I came across that one after I looked at the other 2,964.

i didn't realise that there was a running total on flickr photographs but i found that i had left some of the groups i was in coz i didn't have time to get involved really.
thats the reason for my low count :o i think

emm that woman the one whos Dad cought a huge fish! has 27,015 contacts!! and is in at least 500 groups! she must have a team of people working for her just keeping her flickr account in shape
although i notice she only has 2,965 photos posted, i guess all that corresponding with the contacts and blogging etc. takes up soo much time!
    :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

Yeah, Gail was that contact. I started getting leery of looking at my contacts in case random boobs popped up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

What could be better in this life than random boobs popping up? Mar-diddly-arvellous

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

One of my mates did a test recently... tagged a totally normal photo with every rude tag he could come up with... photo got unreal amounts of hits.. just shows what people are searching for. Incidentally it got loads of comments and favs too, once found in a search people seemed to appreciate the photo itself as well.

    just more ideas :P

I tagged one of mine "The lord of the Skelligs" It went through the roof. Yep the whole thing becomes really boring after awhile, though I still add my pics to a good few groups. Has anyone else come across "Greasemonkey"? A great little yoke for useful scripts.

The joys of Greasemonkey!! YES. I only use it at work with Firefox, I use a better broswer at home ;) hehe. But yeah, very handy indeed. Alot of groups have members that write their own scripts for various things liike pool cleaning, voting, tagging etc

An unusual twist with the smallest amount if views and pics. Thats it, I am registering another name to get the smaller award heheheheheh

On a serious note guys (dib & kuroino and I suppose Baz too) - just keep posting pics here for decent critique & on Flickr to be able to showcase them to everyone else too.

yep ! Totally off topic I know ... I got a set printed out before christmas. They're great. The only thing is that you get really reluctant to hand out the ones you like ! I think its the narrow crop that makes some of them so interesting (for people who haven't seen them they're about the same length but half the width of a normal business card) because you have to be a bit creative in selecting the crop when you get them printed.

My most popular photograph is this one ...
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/dairequinlan/325473082/

Yes, it is, depressingly enough, of a kitten. I resisted the impulse to add 'fluffy' or 'cute' to the tags but even so its managed to pick up 52 views all by its self. Its just a depressing reminder of what the average flickr viewer seems to randomly search for (disregarding the NSFW ones of course !). But Goddarnit I don't want to be the 'guy with the cute picture of the kitten' !!

Actually I think I'll add 'cute' and 'fluffy' to the tags right now and see what happens. Flickr whoring ! hurrah !

I always have about 5 or 6 different ones in my wallet.
The reactions, ouu's, aaa's and coooing when I take them
out in the pub is great.

Annoyingly, I've shown my moo cards to everyone who knows me, so I can't get them out in the pub anymore...

(too hard to resist a good double entendre)

Anyway, I've been on flickr for about a year now, have 240 pics and nearly 14000 views. flickr popularity is a numbers game. I've played it and started to hit explore regularly but you start to expect more and I just couldn't keep spending the same amount of time on the site. Then it gets a bit tedious with all the thoughtless comments for the sake of comments, and I tend to refuse to comment on pictures that are in a 'gajillion' groups. That and I haven't shot much at all since it got cold and dark round here, killed my mojo that did.

If you want to enjoy a more quality based flickr rather than quantity, join a couple of smaller groups, possibly even something like C.A.F.E. for some in-depth although mostly pretentious crit on your pics, and establish a list of contacts who post stuff you like and can take the time to look through their stream and post thoughtful comments, usually people who are interested in photography and photoshop rather than just back-slapping. Then you know that when they leave you comments it's off their own back and not just an 'I looked at yours now come look at mine pls' thing.
