Is there any bank that provides a coin counting service?
Does the central bank at least offer this?

I heard that some tesco store does it, ie you toss in the mixture of coins and I think you get a tesco voucher to the full value. I know in some stores they have private owned machines but these take a massive 5-10%. Most people would be dumping in at least €200 in coins so paying €20 for a go of a machine for 2 minutes is ridiculous! these probably cost less than arcade machines that cost €1 for 5minutes go!

Many shops are offering coin sorters for about €20 now and I have seen professional ones at shows for a few grand.

I have heard before that coins cost more to make than there worth, e.g. a 20 cent coin might cost €1 to actually produce. Therefore the central bank and in reality the taxpayers must foot this bill, pay to replace the horded coins. Surely the banks could invest a few grand to get their coins back, people would be lining up.

In the self service checkouts in supermarkets you sometimes get stuck there with people shovelling in millions of coins, but they must do this one by one. If some supermarket had a shovel slot like in the toll booths they would get plenty of customers and move the lines along quicker.

Also I remember in the 80's if you went to mc donalds and gave in £5 in small change you got a free burger, and superquinn gave free donuts or something. Change was so scarce the banks were charging retailers to get coins, I think they still might.

I have had a go of them. you still have to count out the coins, it does stack them nicely for you. I was thinking of getting tubes cut to size for each coin so I fill it up and dump it in a bag.

Being able to toss a bucket into a bank and get €400 back would be a lot quicker and easier though...

I discovered recently that the automated check-outs in Tesco take ALL coins, right down to 1c coins. I was there recently and forgot my wallet, and I knew I had a heap of coins in the car. I had about €8 in all sorts of crap and was able to feed it all in coin by coin. was getting some strange looks though !!
