    Hi ,
can anyone recommend a good canon series of cameras ?

I hear the Powershots are good, they seem like you have a lot of
control over the picture taking, which I like, or if anyone has anyother
brands (models) to recommend, I like taking pics where i can mess around
with ISO, Shutter speed, effects ...etc ... yet I'm not about to buy an SLR
    just yet !,
so looking around the €400 mark MAX!!

    ideally €300

I've had 2 Canon Ixus and they are fantastic cameras, however their downside is they are not great in low light situations without a tripod, and they produce a lot of red eye.

My money woukd go on the Casio Exilium if I was to buy again

I just bought a canon powershot A630 to bring on the slopes while sking, by all accounts it is supposed to yeild very good image quality for the money, this is an 8 megapixel and the canon A640 10megapixel which was relased the same date, they are basically the same except for mega pixel and colour of bodies. I bought it thru bhphotovideo with 2GB SD memory and SD card reader for 300 euro in total including shiiping. The only downside would be at anything above iso200 u get alot of noise but if you have a program like noise ninja well this does'nt become too much of a problem. Heres a link to the review on the a640 model.

I've a Powershot A610, a slightly older 5MP model of the A630. Anyway, it's a great camera, easy to use, lots of manual over-ride & various auto functions.

I can't fault it, well apart from some images being a little noisy at 400 iso, otherwise it's very good. I've printed shots at 5X7 inches and they're very good, I've printed one at 12X8 inches and it was still very clear & sharp (not far off 35mm quality to be honest).
