Quick question.. i was sure if was possible to hook up my XBOX (original, not 360) to a 5.1 surround system but the lack of connections at the back seem to suggest not.

I see you can buy these specialised sets just for it but is it possible using an adapter of some sort to hook up brand new and shiny existing surround sound system to my XBOX? Seeing as i use my XBOX for everything from playing games to watching shows, films and DVD's.. it really is a must!

Surely it can be done, right?

What sound system do you have? Get a decent cable for the Xbox and it will come with a optical out, any decent 5.1 set should have an optical in.

    Cheers Ciaran.

Forget the brand name of the particular surround system now but it's definantly a decent system and i'm 95% sure i saw an optical in at the back of the subwoofer last night.

Do you have a link to this particular cable i should get online? Just so i know where to look.

Prob be the best one to get, not sure if they sold the other cable this side of the Atlantic.

Ahhhhh.. you're a lifesaver. That description definitely reads more like what i want of my "XBOX experience"! :D

£20 is a bit steep.. might give a look around EBay and see if i can get it a bit cheaper.

    Thanks again mate.

It can be done... with this...
    http://cgi.ebay.ie/P34-New-Xbox-AV-S-Video-Cable-w-Optical-Audio-Output_W0QQitemZ330069086970QQihZ014QQcategoryZ20385QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
then you get an optical lead to go from the side of this cable to your av reciever! There are probably better ones and you can get a component cable version too if your tv could take it! Your connection just has to have this little hole on the side...

Was going to say that but you need a US or modded Xbox for that to work.

Check out Game, they have their own brand version which comes with the optical cable. Got it a couple of years ago and is perfect.

I wont argue cuz I'm not 100% sure.. but I saw this...
    http://play.com/Games/Xbox/GENBRW/3-/1112106/Joytech_Digital_AV_Component_Cable/Product.html
and it says that it'll only work on a PAL xbox, so I presume it does work... and he probably does have a modded xbox...

It probably wont output proper HD and definitly wont during games, but I presume he'll get picture which is a fair bit better at least?! Again, not really 100% on any of this, but it seems fairly logical!

Yes.. my XBOX is modded. No Game near me in Sligo.. there's a GameStop but don't think they had many (if any) XBOX accessories last time i was in there.

Picture quality is not of massive concern.. seeing as i only occassionally use it for gaming. It's really used more of a media centre (with a 250GB external drive sharing over SMB). And i presume picture quality would not be enhanced on any DivX / XviD videos played from it (as the video quality would only be as good as the level it was encoded at). But i would however be especially interested to hear how a DTS / DD 5.1 DVD sounds when played from it.

Anyways.. will give a look around for one but if anyone has one lying around spare, i'll gladly take it off your hands.

Cheers for the help again all.

    Arse... just bought this online.

But realised my surround system does not have an optical out... it simply has two sections - 'Audio In' and 'Audio Out'. Both with 6 inputs for RCA Plugs (Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right, Center and Woofer). I realise 'Audio Out' is for the actual speakers which means i need six connections for the 'Audio In'.

Anything i can do? Do any XBOX Scart cables support these six connections?

PS - Oh.. and this is my sound system!
