    Hey Guys,

I was just wondering what website etc you guys like to use for storing & sharing your photos online. I’ve never really found a site that works the way I want so I host them on my own webspace. I found a great little program called Gena Web Gallery Creator which quickly and easily makes a really nice little gallery like this.

However I want something a little better so I thought I’d ask here and check out what the pro’s use. The type of thing I am looking for is:
    - Domain name like www.website.com/myname or similar
    - List of ‘photo albums’ etc where photos are organised
    - Thumbnails that link to well sized bigger versions
    - easy uploading, naming and describing photos
    - A decent amount of storage
    - Free would be nice but I’m prepared to pay it its good enough

Can anyone suggest something that migth suit me, or what deo you guys like to use?

    Thanks
    Zascar

I would recommend deviantart.com as it meets all your requirements and also because its a good community to be a part of imo.

Domain name like www.website.com/myname or similar[/COLOR]

    http://username.deviantart.com

    ie http://zwanzig.deviantart.com/

    - List of ‘photo albums’ etc where photos are organised = No lists

    - Thumbnails that link to well sized bigger versions = Yep

    - easy uploading, naming and describing photos = Yep & viewer commenting too.

    - A decent amount of storage = Unlimited whether you pay or not

    - Free would be nice but I’m prepared to pay it its good enough = Free or you can pay for extras.

You also get a free basic print account - or you can pay more and then get 50% of each print price.

Ok thanks, I've just signed up and will give it a go. Looks quite good but not sure if I will stick with it. I do know Deviantart and have browsed it many times before, I finde it a little dark and dreary looking.

Does anyone use Flickr, Picasa, Webshots etc? What else do people use and why?
    Thanks!

    - Domain name like www.website.com/myname or similar

I use Flickr at the moment: and the address for me is http://www.flickr.com/photos/windsandbreezes/

    - List of ‘photo albums’ etc where photos are organised
This is done using sets - I find it very handy for keeping things under control.

    - Thumbnails that link to well sized bigger versions

Have a look at how flickr works. You can define what gets seen.

    - easy uploading, naming and describing photos

Very nice uploader available for flickr

    - A decent amount of storage

Depends on whether you are willing to pay 25 dollars a year or not. There's a limited amount on a free account.

    - Free would be nice but I’m prepared to pay it its good enough

Alternatively you can buy your own domain name and hosting account and use Gallery 2 or JAlbum.

I use Flickr at the moment because I like its interface, I like the way I can configure it to talk to various blogs and I like the pretty much unlimited storage I get from it. I am not such a fan of deviantart although I have an account because it seems to be too much hassle to upload a lot of photographs at a time.

I use Flickr and also have my own blog at bhalash.com.

We also have a fairly active boards.ie group on Flickr:

Same as himself above, use flickr for storage and blog for photo based ranting.

Its worth checking out gallery2 if you want to set up your own webpage

    http://gallery.menalto.com/

other than that, flickr or DA wont steer you far wrong. I use both. And a few photobucket accounts for storage.

Thanks, just installed it and will play about tonight.

I've been playing with Flickr too and it is excellent. Apart from I would perfer if the main page displayed my list of 'sets' rather than random photos. Perhaps I can change this I will haev to have a play

    Thanks!
I recommend Picasa Web Albums to my students. Whlle Picasa is Windows only Mac iPhoto users can download a free plug-in and get the same service.

In each case you decide the resolution (including hi res) and Picasa Web Albums works out the rest. You can also decide whether albums are public or private

You get 250 megabytes for free and you can upgrade to 6 gigabytes for $25 per year.

You can check out a working version here http://picasaweb.google.com/digitalbeginners

Thanks for all the help guys. I've had a play with all of them and i like Flickr the best. I actually already had an account but never saw some of the more advanced organising features, it is fantastic and works very well. I tested it out and soon took the plunge and paid the $25 for the ful account - definitely worth it I think.

Its nice the way its a big community, I've alreadd had peiopel add me and friends and make comments on my pix etc.

Now to take some more decent photos to showcase there!

Been running Gallery2 on my website for a while now and I find it easy to use fully customizable, fast and fully featured.

At the moment I just use it to dump photo's and not too much for public viewing.

    Have a walk around.

PS: have a deviantart one too and a photo.net account.
