I need a little advice here.
My Dell 8400 ( I know, I know!) has had a problem ever since I tried to install a graphics card, It fried a stick or Ram first and then ever since has intermittently frozen, which meant pulling the plug to shutdown.
When you plug the power lead back in the fan/s just start to spin up to what I would imagine is their maximum speed and stay that way.
if you pull the plug and wait and replug it does the same thing.
I think it maybe the PSU or am I wrong?
I would just like an idea as to what could be the problem before I decide to junk it or build my own that is able to be upgraded easily without the hassle.

It could be the fan on the gfx card - some of them are horrifically loud.

What gfx card did you install?

I have removed the 6600gt card so it's deffo not that.
The fans are going so hard they blow paper away from the back of the PC!

Hmmm... Perhaps this Dell PC is trying to fly away? Stick wings on each side of the tower, open the window and stand back! When your PC has migrated you can then buy yourself a new PC that is easy to upgrade! :D

I'll be outside if you're looking for me...

Sounds like overheating. Is the heatsink(under green plastic) clogged with dust?

No I have been pretty good with cleaning the heatsink lately so I don't think it's dust.

Since you have the unfortunate problem of it being dell bios on a dell machine, there is not much I can do. Without being about to swap parts(I'm assuming mobo is fried) your in for a tough time.

I dont normally recommend this, but go buy a decent pc or one with a 3 year warrenty from dell.

I know nothing about dell bios(es?) but from the previous post i'm supposing they're not very user friendly. But if the option were there I would try loosening up the memory timings.

    The option isn't there.

I am going to dump the P.O.S out the window, I HATE Companies that make it intentionally difficult to fix/modify/upgrade machines.
