Hey guys, just a quick question; more so out of curiosity rather than anything else-

I was trying to get a shot of the moon with my sigma 70-300; no tripod or anything because I was hanging out of the top bedroom window!) But I didnt think twice about focusing and set it to 'infinity'. But I noticed that the shots weren't completely in focus and I had to pull the focus back a tiny bit...

Whats with that? I thought it was kinda strange... Any ideas?

Yeh, I've noticed that now and again, infinite focus doesn't actually seem so infinite.. Not sure of why it'd happen, most likely the lenses being a fraction out of position or something..

thats what i was thinking... unless there was something beyond infinity to focus on lol...

Infinite can be kinda soft anyways.

If you have any primes, and have a tripod, check out hyperfocal focusing...

IMO the moon is best shot with auto focus it's just so hard to pick it in manual.

lol well I was really just seeing how big the moon would be at 300mm... I wasnt actually trying to get a good shot- but as it turned out I didnt need a tripod, I balanced it against my open window and played around with the shutter speed, which gave me camera-shake free photos... But if I had to take a proper photo of the moon I would deffo use a tripod!

*Oh and once I realised that 'infinity' wasn't quite infinite- I focused it easily enough in manual...

not at all. you can easily handhold for photos of the moon.
if you want to expose for the ground, however, it's a different story. but in that situation, the moon itself will be completely overexposed.
