it's a lot Devil Wears Prada!! At one stage they even played 'Suddenly I See' by KT Tunstall which was the opening song in that movie. The show was okay though...entertaining but nothing extraordinary.

'Ugly Betty' is a US version of "Yo soy Betty, la fea" which, made in 1999, predates "The Devil Wears Prada" which is not the first movie to mock the fashion industry anyway...If anything "The Devil Wears Prada" is very "Ugly Betty"..

    handbags!!!

    lol

I enjoyed it! and with a regular slot of 7pm...yet another excuse NOT to watch that dribble Emerdale!!

well the pilot was probably being filmed/put together around the time the movie would have been just finished or released so I'm sure there are some stylistic similarities though obviously the base of the story has been around for age, this version is obviously owing alot to Sex and the City more then anything. Actually let's face so did the Devil Wears Prada.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 episodes last night. pity they've given this such a woeful time slot.

It was alright I wouldn't be rushing back to watch it. I didn't hang around for the second episode.

Is it getting a 7pm Slot or a 8:30pm either way it is very usual for RTE to compeat with the Soaps. I can see it moving to 9pm eventually, just before Lost at 10.

I thought 1 hour was too long, 30mins would have been plenty for it.

Shame on you for not watching episode 2.
Its a 7Pm slot. As i've mentioned before they have to repeat episodes of Father Ted next Monday why not put on then at 9PM where more people will see it early in its run. Its huge in the Us nad will be interesting to see how well it does on Channel 4. They have promoted it well.

I won't be able to see the RTE epsidoes but its on 3 other times during the week.

Saw an episode of it. How could you mistake it for Extras or the Office? The look/script/acting are completely different.

    Bizarre.

I guess because two cast members are from The Office and Extras

I saw a it of it tonight on c4 and it looked good (as oddly enough did ugly betty!) Couldnt watch all of it tho ... so was that the first episode and will it be repeated? Id like to try to get into it from the start so it doesnt end up being another one of those shows that everyones going on about and I havent got a clue whats going on!

It was promote well on RTE Two every second add over xmas that and DH.

But It is nice to see that RTE Two might compete with TV3 for their soap opera audience, surely people get sick of Coro St, Emmers, EastEs and Fair ****y every ****ing night of the week.

At least its not a repeat of Friends.

I only saw the first episode, which wasn't bad but didn't blow my mind. It's an average show really. I forgot there was a second episode on RTE2 later on so I missed it :( Will I have to wait til next Friday on Channel 4, because that way I will have to watch the third episode on RTE2 having not seen the previous one, and then watch the second episode on Friday....if you get me!

They should have got an uglier girl to play Betty for a show called UGLY Betty....it's not a very origional idea but then again....I watch soaps. :p

Unconfirmed ratings indicate 4.5million whatched it Channel 4 on Friday. Desperate Housewives launched with 4.4million while Lost launched with 6.75 million on Channel 4.

Reviews by viewers have been mixed though judging from digitalspy.co.uk

they will move it to a better time slot because of the fact that channel four have just starting showing it and rte are alway competing with channel four

This weeks episode was a bit dramatic with Daniels brother and I am not really interested in the Fey Summers storyline at all. But Bettys makeover and this seen made up for that along with the great one liners.:)

Ugly Betty: a worthy successor for Friends?

Channel 4 may have finally found a US import, in Ugly Betty, to fill the gaping hole left in its Friday night schedule by the end of Friends.
Ugly Betty launched on Channel 4 on Friday with 4.5 million viewers and a 19% share between 9.30pm and 10.30pm, according to unofficial overnights.

This is a vast improvement on Channel 4's Friday night performance in recent months, with the network regularly bumping along at around 1 million viewers in this slot.

However, in its first half hour, Ugly Betty still lost out to two celebrity singalong shows, ITV1's Soapstar Superstar, and BBC1's Just the Two of Us.

Soapstar Superstar began its second series on a winning note with 5 million viewers and a 20% audience share over two hours from 8.30pm.

Just the Two of Us attracted 4.3 million viewers and an 18% share over 90 minutes from 8.30pm.

In its concluding half hour from 10pm, Just the Two of Us drew 4.5 million viewers against Ugly Betty, which had 4.4 million during that 30-minute period.

Does anybody think that RTE might now move the show to a better timeslot than mondays at 7PM. Its against soaps and nobody is ever home. It has finally got the critical acclaim and it deserves to be seen. I have noticed they are repeating it at midnight midweek, but seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Thought it was about time i coined in an opinion on this.

Watched 5 episodes of it and ended up getting more and more irritated as each episode progressed. I find the show all a bit of a washover - not particular funny or clever and definitely don't think it deserves the acclaim it gets.. and what's all this about it teaching us beauty is not only skin deep? American Ferreira is as we've all seen is far from ugly.. what it teaches us is that you clearly need to be pretty to get ahead in Hollywood, and no amount of train-tracks and thick glasses will teach us any different.

Bit of a phony-baloney message the cast and producers have been spinning to be honest.

    But just my 2c's.

Exactly - she's not an ugly girl so it kind of negates their entire concept.

They have her looking pretty horrible in the show tbh. Can't imagine too many ugly girls signing up to play the part of an ugly girl though.

Started here last week. After watching the first episode I can't see myself watching anymore unless there is nothing else on.
Didn't enjoy it, comedy was poor and too much of a poor ugly girl fights for survival in a beautiful world type thing.

US show Ugly Betty proves a hit with viewers

    14 January 2007
RTE2 may have hit the jackpot with new show Ugly Betty, but may live to regret its decision to schedule the show at the teen-oriented timeslot of 7pm on Mondays.

RTE2 may have hit the jackpot with new show Ugly Betty, but may live to regret its decision to schedule the show at the teen-oriented timeslot of 7pm on Mondays.

The show has performed well in this slot, averaging 157,000 viewers for a 10 per cent share of people viewing at that time, compared with 57,000 before Christmas in the same time slot.

Ugly Betty has attracted 4.5 million viewers for Channel 4 – giving it a 19 per cent of viewers share between 9.30pm and 10.30pm on Friday evenings, according to unofficial figures.

That’s four times what Channel 4 usually achieves in this slot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 481 ✭✭SoSueMe

If only the scheduled it at a decent time. I suppose Thursdays at 8PM is a start.

RTE are showing so many repeats at the moment and too much CSI. Episodes of Miami have been shown numerous times before. I just don;t know why they couldn't have put ugly bety on at decent time when they knew it is huge in the US and Channel 4 were pining huge hopes on the show succeeding, which it has.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 150 ✭✭ScruffySlayer

actually i've noticed that. It's becoming ridiculous how much CSI they show. And I'd love to know who's scheduling and buying the programs because they have a cancelled series like Kitchen Confidential on at 9 and a show like Ugly Betty with huge hit potential on at 7. Makes no sense at all.

Well the good news is it has a new time at 8PM Thursdays but the best slot would be before Desperate Housewives at there is a lot of crossover audience but I guess RTE have to spread the wealth over their ebtire schedule.

Here is the schedule on RTE until it starts on Thursday:

23:30 on Tuesday 23rd January: The Lyin', the Watch and the Wardrobe. Series 1, episode 5.

19:00 on Monday 29th January: Trust, Lust and Must. Series 1, episode 6.

23:30 on Tuesday 30th January: Trust, Lust and Must. Series 1, episode 6.

20:05 on Thursday 1st February: After Hours. Series 1, episode 7. *NEW TIME*

I can't believe after a month we are seven episodes in.

    Last nights highlight was definately:

Each to their own. The reason its doing so well as its one of the most different shows on TV, its not for everybody but its successful and award winning for a reason.

Its an easy watch, I'll give it that. I just fail to see how its award worthy, its not particularly funny nor is she a particularly good actor. Do you think if it makes it to a second season it'll do as well?

Its definantely easy to watch. Just sit back and relax. The visual and music style of the show helps. I think its award worhty as it genuinly is funny. Its more of a dramedy in the vein of desperate housewives. It always has great laugh out loud moments in every episode. America Ferrera is amazing and she is the core of the show. She certainly deserved her golden globe win.

Ugly Betty will definently have a second season, judging by how each episode it improves every week and reviews from the Us are amazing for the latest episodes. So yes it should have an even better second season.

Off the top of my head I wouldn't say it's award worthy but if you look at the competetion and the fact that it's in it's first season (when shows usually garner the most awards) then I could see how it would win some. The thing that pissed me off more was 24 getting screwed over by Greys Anatomy despite having it's best season since the first

Right, gave it another watch tonight, thought it was rather shíte tbh. Mildly entertaining the first few times but has definately went downhill in my opinion.

Same here rb_ie. Watched the rerun of episode 2 on friday and episode 3 on sunday (poor weekend of tv).

If there was something else on I would have switched. My view is still the same.

It is like The Pursuit of Happyness. Not the plot eaxactly, but that undertone that is running through it. From out of nothing this ugly (or poor) character will rise, gain the respect for all the hard work put in and make it. The American dream. *puke*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Gave my views on it already which haven't changed from the 1 or 2 more episodes i've sat through with the girlfriend since.

Really don't understand the praise it gets myself. But hey, if Will & Grace can get million of viewers and Emmys... then well, need i say more?
