Laptop hinge broken

My Dell D600 which I bought in 2004 is on its last legs.
The left hand hinge is detached from the screen. It also pulls up part of the bottom bit, where the power button is. The space bar is also broken, although still usuable.

Can this be fixed and how expensive would it be?

It's totally my own fault it's broken by the way.

I'm getting a new laptop in a few months (hopefully in Feb), so I just need it to work til then. Is there any point in gettig it fixed when I'm getting a new one soon?

    Thanks

my previous laptop was also a Dell, i bought in 2003, the hinde on the right hand side came Clean away from the base of the laptop, i dont understand How can something made from solid metal break = i.e the hinge located on the screen sits into the base of the laptop and its supposed to work as a hinge "open/close / close open" And yet it manages to snap in half!? iv also heard it happened on other older Dell laptop's, it was only about 15 months old when it happened.. i have since upgraded to a fujisu siemens AMILO..

I'm in the same boat, mine is like this:

Bit of a pain in the ass alright, I've never done anything to it but use it's function as a hinge:(

Mines an acer and I've had it about 15 months too, but have used it a lot.

I don't think it would be worth it.

Have a Dell Inspiron 6000 for the past year. My 's' button is broken. As in, it will only work without the button cap..need to get it fixed, it driving me crazy! Will i have to send it back to Dell themselves to get it fixed? How long will that take?..I need my laptop so badly the next two weeks..got lesson plans to write!!

    Sorry to hijack this thread!!

Given that you're getting a new one, fixing the hinge probably isn't worth it.

However, it may be fixable, easily or not but I can't remember the layout of the hinge on the D600. If you felt like taking off the plastic bezel in between the keyboard and LCD panel and taking a picture of the hinge from above and the other side for comparison that'd help. Comes off easily if you stick the sticky outie bit of the cap of a bic pen under the right hand side of the bezel where there's a bit of a groove. It's most of the way off on the left side anyway. Two second job to get off, two second job to put back on. of course, you may feel that's an adventure too far.

Looks like it's done some damage to the plastic in front of the processor heat sink as well.

Lazy git:p Start a new thread (nothing to do with a broken hinge,).

I'll take a quick look at it if you're still around Limerick. It probably only works without the actual button attached as when you've it attached it's not attached properly. Having said that they can be very finicky, I've fixed mine in a rough manner a few times but depending on how bad it is, I mightn't be prepared to let an undelicate sod like me at it. If it has to go back I wouldn't care to guess how long they'll keep it for. You could always buy a cheap external keyboard for a tenner and use that in the absence of sending it back. new laptop keyboards tend to be not too cheap (quick ebay search gives an i6000 keyboard price of about 66 euros, if your warranty is over and Dell charge more, get one at that price, I'll fit it for nowt before you can count to twenty)

Don't you want to sell your NoteBook?
    If YES - how much?

I apologised already for hijacking this thread..thought it kinda fitted in here..'laptop' 'broken' 'dell'...vola!!:D

The button has been fitted properly(i think!!:)), but by all means you can still check it out. Will be in back in Limerick from tonight onwards.

Will give Dell a ring now and ask is my warranty up..then if it is i'll ask how much a new keyboard is.

Edit/: Warranty out since Dec 20th..Technical support one said I need a new keyboard..gota ring sales tomorrow and ask them how much that shall cost..yey!
