i did a cert in mechanical engineering in collage, and thanks to it i get okay pay, working nights and weekends ( and tonight ) in factories for the last 7 years

i can easily get into any job as long as its a shift job in a factory

i dont do collage, I really hated ever minute of collage and school, but always loved working with my hands

i was thinking of making a career change, and one that really interests me is to go labouring on building sites, i'd say both markets (building and production) will collapse anyday now, but most builders are single and spend all their money on crashing jeeps and drinking shots (not always in that order) , so they can't take a drop in pay and will hopefully just leave the country to continue their wasteful lifestyle, and their will be a huge market in fixing all the crap houses that was throwen up in the last 10 years

    1) how would i get a job on a site, they dont really advertise
    2) what sort of pay would i get starting out
3)am i too old to take on an apprentship in the next few years (30)

I had a similar (sort of, in a roundabout kind of way) to yours. I used to work in a Hotel as a Trainee Manager. All started off well, but the ~6 day weeks with no overtime were starting to get to me. (They gave us Leu(sp?) time instead) After a while, I just though meh, and applied for a new job, was offered it and started the following Monday. Best thing I could've done, IMO. Better money, nicer people etc.

Anyway, about the apprenticeship, never say never. Don't be put off by your age, I know of a few people who've started apprenticeships around your age and they've never looked back. First year apprentices get paid ~€250 a week, IIRC. If you check the Fás website you'll find more info. Good luck. :)
