PC World might have some good deals, also I would personally recommend the Western Digital MyBook range. Komplett.ie have them in stock.

There was an external HD for sale in PC World for €99, I think the price is €110 now. It's a Maxtor 320Gb, shows as 300Gb in use. It's fast USB2 (7200 rpm) with 16 Mb cache, comes ready formatted as NTFS. This seems to be a new product line for Maxtor- Maxtor Basics. True to the name there's no software or cd's with this.
I have one of these it runs very quietly, goes to standby with the PC and it's about €32 cheaper (including delivery) than the cheapest equivalent from Komplett: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=318906 (and the Komplett one only has an 8Mb cache)

I got a Packard Bell 500 GB external HD for under 200euro in the PC World Sale.

There are also cheaper options for 400, 300 or even 200GB from the "Freecom" range. :) I compared these prices to Komplett before purchasing and it came out PC world was for once - cheaper. :)

    many thanks for the info
looks like that pcworld might be the way to go in the end
are there any good offers for internal ones or just external?

It sounds like a contradiction but I think Komplett do usually work out the cheapest for internal hard drives. I'd usually check out PC World's component section and Maplin's sale offers first though, especially in January.

Was only on the look out for external, and they were the ones which they were promoting the most in that section.

    400GB for €139 - good value.

The 500GB USB 2 external drive in Harvey Norman's is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, which is an IDE interface with 8MB cache. This is one of the newer Seagates, with perpendicular recording. The case is a cool silver aluminium and I think it was very good value at 199 euro!
