Free life travel for baby born on train
    29 December 2006 11:06

A baby girl born in the restaurant car of a high-speed train in Portugal will get free rail travel by the nation's state railway company for the rest of her life.

A 21-year-old woman delivered Mariana on the train traveling between Lisbon and Portugal's second-city Oporto on Wednesday with the aid of a male nurse who answered a call for help over the train's intercom system.

The train made an unscheduled stop at Vila Nova de Gaia where an ambulance was waiting to take the mother and her baby to hospital.

Both were found to be healthy.

In addition to awarding the baby a lifetime pass for free travel, railway company Comboios de Portugal also sent the young mother a bouquet of flowers.

And if they did it'd probably be off-peak hours/certain services only :p

The drivers would want extra money for the stress of having to deal with such a situation

Annual tickets are only 2,000 euro for IE. I imagine the theoretical cost is in the order of 50,000-100,000 euro, but in reality if the seat is empty the marginal cost is negligible.

I could - in real terms it wouldn't cost them that much and would be excellent publicity.

the baby is better off without it! "we apologise for the late arrival of this train, this is due to loose babies in the carriage"
