Saddam Hussein was executed at 3:05 Irish time this morning (30/12/06)

Im not in favour of the death penalty on any grounds, in my opinion it will only add to the trouble in iraq as he will be made a martyr, he should imo serve a life penalty with absolutely no privilages.

what does everyone think about this

*btw i in no way support saddam in any way

There are two types of people who deserve to be hanged, Former Iraqi Dictators, and people who make bad puns.

apparently so, the premier of iraq was quoted as saying earlier that the hanging will be recorded and MAY be broadcast, we will have to wait and see

If it's recorded, no doubt it will be all over YouTube.

Hang the bastard, that's what I say.

Awh. His trial was almost as good as the Michael Jackson one.

I doubt Sky News will show live footage of him being hung, but I will bet if there is footage anywhere, it's going to be on Fox News with over the top voice overs and flashy text strewn about the place.

Morgan Freeman should do the narration à la March of the Penguins.

Or Terry Wogan à la the Eurovision.

Of course they're recording it and it will be broadcast. Fox news will edit it into some mtv type music video and play it over and over again for years to come. This whole thing is a big joke.

Ah to hell with Saddam, I want Bush hanged, goddamit!

    - Death via a small pliers over the course of a day or two, or ten would be kind in the case of this particular piece of filth.........

Try a Google search for: Saddam torture

    - If even 1% of the results are half true - then you have a reason to smile at the impending execution of this skid-mark.

.......If the ar$ehole swings on the end of a washing line for six weeks gasping it would be a reciprocal humanitarian response for a truly evil, vapid, puddle of puke.

P.S. The sig pre-dates the thread by a week or so.........

    - If you scorn the Sad Profs remarks perhaps you have not witnessed popular news media at its lowest ebb - Sky News is particularily puerile in its quest to claw its way to the moral nadir of the airwaves- those cnuts will prob. screen the Sad-dam swinging [pun intended] to some chee-z-y swing classics - in fact they are probably trying to flog advertising contracts with any industry/commercial entities with a spin on hanging - eg. moth-ball companies etc. ;)

I can't find any information about the hanging when I google, and rte was reporting that he may be hung within the next thirty days, so I don't think it was pushed forward this far so soon.

Does anyone have a trustworthy link to back up what the OP has said?

Edit: nevermind, I think I've found something worth reading.

Youtube pulled the clip of that Irish girl getting kicked a few months back and nearly damaging her head.

I seriously doubt they will allow a live hanging, nor should they.

The front page of this mornings (Saturday's) Irish Times confirms it will happen, but expects it "as early as 6am today"
Saddam will be executed today, says judge

An Iraqi judge appointed to attend the hanging of ousted president Saddam Hussein said yesterday he would be executed today, giving rise to consternation and disbelief among Arabs and Muslims, writes Michael Jansen.

Iraqi government spokesmen have denied the judge's statement, but it was confirmed in a fax message to a news agency by the US State Department.

Lawyers for Saddam yesterday asked a US court to order a halt to his execution, which may be carried out as early as 6am Baghdad time today. In a last-minute filing to the US District Court of Washington, Saddam's lawyers asked for a temporary stay of execution because he is a defendant in a civil case in the same court and he has been prevented from being able to defend himself.

Hanging Saddam anytime before the middle of next week would be regarded as sacrilege because Muslims are performing the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and are today celebrating Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, marking the ritual slaying by the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) of a sheep instead of his son.

It is customary to forgive enemies, grant pardons and release prisoners at this time rather than carry out executions.

Arab commentators say Saddam would be regarded as a "sacrificial lamb" if he was hanged during this period.

Although Iraqi spokesmen and US officials last night denied early reports that he had been transferred to the Iraqi government's custody, these reports were given substance by the announcement yesterday by Saddam's chief lawyer, Khalil al-Dulaimi, that he was asked to collect the former president's belongings from the US prison near Baghdad International Airport in preparation for his handover to Iraqi authorities for execution.

On Thursday, Saddam met his half-brothers and fellow inmates Sabawi and Watban Ibrahim Hassan, and lawyer Badie Araf, to whom he gave his will, untitled poems and other effects.

Mr Araf said: "He told them he was happy he would meet his death at the hands of his enemies and be a martyr, not just languish in jail."

For years I thought that I was in favour of the death penalty, a life for a life etc. But now, after giving it some serious thought, I seriously cannot condone the hanging of Saddam. It's no better than he was and has caused me to rethink my whole attitude to death penalties.

    - If he spent the rest of his days regretting his abhorrent, evil ways on a concrete cell floor would [in some ways] be preferable to me......

......but you cannot expect the idiots [for they will be to the forefront I'm sure] that formerly worshipped the twat to return just punishment for his [ahem] misdemeanours can you ?

should those who supported his regime also be punished ? ( USA and the at least 35 other countries selling arms to him during the first Gulf war, and not even a bad word in the media during that war )

The RAF were bombing Iraqi civilians in the 20's and the British military using poison gas on them too. Some of those people are possibly still alive - what should be done ?

In fairness they haven't confirmed anything, other that it may happen. Reports two days ago was that it would be within thirty days. Tbh I don't think that it will happen just before a major muslim holiday, mucho incitment.

    From ITN (itn.co.uk)

Saddam Hussein's execution's expected to take place within the next few hours.

His death warrant's apparently been signed by Iraq's prime minister.

National Security Advisor Mowaffak Al Rubaie says the world will have proof
    when the former dictator's dead.

Meanwhile, it's feared British troops in Iraq could be the target of a violent
    backlash, after the execution.

Rose Gentle, whose son Gordon was killed early in the war, says she would have preferred Saddam's imprisonment.

One-hundred-and-twenty-seven service men and women have died in Iraq since March 2003.

    29 December 2006 23:10

A US official in Baghdad has denied reports that the former Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, has been handed over to Iraqi authorites to be hanged.

There is speculation that the former Iraqi dictator will be executed by Saturday at the latest.
    ...
The defence lawyer also said he thought Saddam might well die on Saturday after lawyers were told to collect his belongings.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6218245.stm
Iraq's Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, has said he wants the execution to take place before the end of the year.
    ...
That would be before the start of the Islamic holiday of Eid, which begins at noon on Saturday (0900 GMT) and continues into next week.

Well history itself and notable historical events are a once off - they occur, are documented and recorded and they, naturally, NEVER recur.

With this in mind I will take myself to the bed - fart twice, scratch my testicles and sleep soundly in the knowledge that when I awake Saddam will be as stifff-ff as a priest in a playground.

    - To wait up would be an extension of courtesy that is of course undeserved in this instance.

Aye, it is so true though. :) It is just laughable the way the news channels in the US go about things like this. "The Execution of Saddam Hussein" is on CNN right now.
